Instructions:
- A battery grip is an accessory for an SLR/DSLR (and occasionally other cameras), which allows the camera to hold multiple batteries to extend the battery life of the camera, and adds a vertical grip with an extra shutter release (and other controls), facilitating the shooting of portrait photography
- It usually attaches to the camera body through the camera's own battery compartment and provides a cassette to hold additional batteries to increase the battery life for the camera. Most battery grips also come with a second cassette allowing the photographer to shoot using multiple AA batteries
- Battery grips are usually designed to fit only one or a few specific camera models, since they must match the body's shape, connectors, and power requirements
How to Install a Hand Grip Battery for a Digital Camera

- Professional accessories, including a battery grip, are available for the camera. This grip adds an extra shutter-release button, as well as storage for additional batteries, prolonging the shooting time available.
- Turn the camera over to reveal the battery cover. Use your thumbnail to open the battery door. Hold the orange battery latch back using your thumb, then turn the camera over to drop the battery out of the camera.
- Locate the hinge on the battery door. Pull the battery door toward the sides of the camera, at a slight angle, to break it free from the body. The battery door then clicks onto the body of the battery pack, at the vertical section that goes inside the camera.
- Place the battery grip into the battery compartment of the camera until the tripod mount screw on the battery grip contacts the threaded hole on the base of the camera. Locate the knurled knob on the front of the battery grip. Turn it to the right to thread the battery grip into the tripod mount on the camera to lock it in place.
- Turn on the camera to verify the battery grip is working correctly.
What is an Addon Handgrip or Battery Grip?
Many big brand SLR camera producers including Nikon and Canon, now give photographers the option of an addon handgrip / battery grip. The image below demonstrates what a battery grip looks like without the camera attached

With a camera attached, it makes the setup look more squarish than rectangular. Apart from looking larger and more impressive, there are other advantages to using a battery grip
Advantages of SLR Camera Battery Grips
- Battery grips make it easier for those with larger hands to grip the camera. In some cases even those with smaller hands will find it useful when holding the camera in a portrait (horizontal) position
- Many battery grips nowadays, are designed to hold more than one battery. For example, the battery grip for Canon's EOS 400D (Digital Rebel XT / Kiss), holds two batteries. Many photographers will recall a number of times when they've been midway through a shot, when they find the camera locks up due to a low battery. By the time they've changed the power supply, the shot is long gone. Adding a grip that holds 2 batteries to your setup, will help solve this problem. The camera won't lock up until both batteries are low
- Some battery grips have an added advantage of weather protection. Many photographers believe they extend the battery life in cold conditions when normally they run down quicker
