How to Use Macro Ring Flash:

Using a macro ring flash opens many doors for creatively capturing close detailed shots in nature and still life subject matter. A macro lens allows the photographer to place the lens in close proximity to the subject, at distances measured in inches rather than the standard lens distance, measured in feet. Using a macro flash ring while not attached to the lens is another creative manner for achieving a distinct lighting effect with the flash ring.

    • Instructions
    • Attach the macro ring flash onto the end of your camera lens. This will vary, based on the type of flash and lens, but most macro ring flashes will screw onto the end of the lens and use a tab or connection point to remain securely fastened to the lens. Using a macro lens will also help achieve the desired outcome as the macro lens will allow you to place the camera and the flash very close to the subject allowing a great deal of detail to be captured by the camera.
    • Connect the remote unit attached to the flash ring to the camera's hot shoe, located at the very top of the camera. The remote unit will connect the flash to the camera and will allow you to control the flash intensity and output settings. Be sure the connection is secured properly because the camera and the flash will not communicate properly and will not fire at the right time or with the proper intensity that matches the camera's aperture and shutter settings to expose the image properly.
    • Take several test images and be sure the ring flash is casting an even, shadowless light around your subject. If you notice hot spots, or bright sections of light on parts of the object, adjust the flash settings to reduce the power of the light source and adjust the distance of the flash from the object.

    The Best Ring Flash:

    • A ring flash is an ideal tool for professional and serious amateur photographers who want that clear, well-lit shot. Ring flashes are mainly used for macro, or closeup photography, and for portraits. Ring lights are a circular light that allows your lens to poke through the middle. When you discharge the flash it floods the subject with well-balanced, soft light that often doesn't need to be diffused.
    • Macro vs. Portrait
    • The first question, besides your budget, you will need to consider is what you plan on using the ring flash for. Using a ring flash in macro photography that's designed for portraits will not function quite as well as a ring flash designed specifically for macro photography, and vice-versa. This is due to the different distances between macro and portrait photography. So to light your subject evenly and without shadows, you will need the proper ring flash that works specifically for that distance.
    • Batteries vs. Plug-ins
    • You will also want to consider what style and strength of batteries you will need for your photography. If you need a portable ring flash, the battery option is best. They are lightweight and easy to carry, because many offer a belt clip attachment. But they may not have enough power for your needs and can run out juice during the middle of a shoot. A ring flash with a plug-in option works great for studio settings. These also offer higher power and more light, but can't be taken with you.
    • Don't Fry Your Camera
    • Next, you will want to find a specific model that works with your camera. Buy one that doesn't have a higher voltage than your camera or else you can fry your camera's circuitry. Many older model flash rings for SLRs have a much higher voltage discharge than your new digital SLR can handle, and if you fry your camera it won't be covered under warranty. It is recommended to purchase the same brand flash ring as your camera.
    • Adapters For Lenses
    • Some flash rings also require you to purchase extra adapters to fit on different size lenses. This can start to add up on a tight budget, so you'll need to consider the lenses you use and whether the flash ring will need adapters or are adjustable.
    • Single Light Bulb vs. Multiple Bulbs
    • A final thing to consider before purchasing a ring flash is whether you want it to have a single, continuous bulb or one with multiple connected bulbs. A ring flash with multiple connected bulbs is ideal because you can use the bulbs independent of each other, which may add depth to your shot, but may also cast some shadows. A single bulb flash ring works well for portraits because it gives a flat, even lighting, but some photographers may not enjoy this because it can produce a light ring around your subject.

  • Other Thoughts: If you want a ring flash that's not pricey and you're not afraid to look intimidating, this is great. The quality is very nice. Subjects are always startled by its appearance, though. It's a little bulky but worth it.

  • Other Thoughts: For the price this is a great O Flash Ring. It does lose two stops of light, which I read before buying. The price is the main reason for the five stars. I do plan to buy some more of my studio equipment from them.

  • Other Thoughts: The Nikon O Flash Ring is good overall, it just doesn't have enough light on the upper part since the flash ring doesn't have reflectors up to the top... must be nice if its a whole circle... I wrapped tissue paper all over it to diffuse and soften the light. ^_^

  • Other Thoughts: Much more efficient (2 stops) than another cheap ring flash adapter I tried. Stays on my 580ex very well. Wish it had diffusion options.
