How to Determine When a Nintendo DS Lite Battery Needs to be Replaced:
To determine when a Nintendo DS Lite battery needs to be replaced, all you need is the game system and a watch. There are two reasons that the battery will need to be replaced-normal wear and tear on the battery or exposure to liquids or moisture.- Instructions
- Establish a brightness level at which you will test the Nintendo DS Lite battery. Do not change the level during the test, as this will mess up the results.
- Set a usage standard, such as only in single-player, non-wireless mode. Wireless features drain the battery faster, which may give you a false impression about the battery's ability to hold a charge. Establishing usage levels gives you a benchmark from which you can accurately judge the battery's ability to hold a charge.
- Time how long it takes to run the battery low at the given usage level. You don't need to drain the battery completely, just until the power light on the Nintendo DS turns red.
- Compare the time it took to run down the battery with the manufacturer's battery life estimate-about 5 hours at the brightest screen setting and without using the wireless features of the Nintendo DS Lite. If your battery delivered significantly less time than this at the same usage level, it is time to replace the battery.
- Exposure to Liquids
- Feel the battery when you take it out of the Nintendo DS Lite. If it is soaking wet from exposure to water or other liquid, the battery will probably need to be replaced.
- Allow the battery to dry and put it back in the Nintendo DS Lite. Try to turn on the unit. If it does not come on, the battery is ruined. If the DS Lite turns on, but runs out of power more quickly than normal, the battery's ability to hold a charge has been affected. Either result means that the battery needs to be replaced.
How to Extend the Battery Life on a Nintendo DS Lite:
If you practice a few good habits, you can extend the battery life on a Nintendo DS Lite. This not only increases the time between charges, but it also extends the total life of the battery.
- Instructions
- Set the screen brightness to its lowest setting. As screen brightness increases, the Nintendo DS Lite draws more heavily on the battery, reducing the time needed between charges by a factor of three.
- Avoid using the wireless communication features of the Nintendo DS Lite without plugging in the AC adapter. Wireless communication places a lot of demand on the power supply.
- Charge the battery fully. A rechargeable lithium ion battery does not like to be partially charged. Its performance tends to degrade more quickly if the power cell is not fully charged.
- Hook up the AC adapter and begin charging as soon as possible after the power light flashes red. Using the battery when it is low tends to adversely affect its performance in the long run.
- Use the sleep mode when the Nintendo DS Lite is not in active use. You can activate the sleep mode by folding the screens closed. The unit will go to sleep, conserving power and extending the battery life.
- Power the Nintendo DS Lite down when you do not expect to use the system for more than a half hour. Although the sleep mode helps slow down power usage, a small amount of current is still being used.

04-12-2011- Other Thoughts: I'm hoping that the battery works as expected and isn't a refurbished/reused/repackaged battery because it doesn't come in the pack as shown in the image. It came in a tiny plastic baggy instead. I guess I'll find out if it works when I give it to my NDS playing mother.

My daughter really enjoys her DS Lite and quickly wore out the original battery pack provided by Nintendo. After numerous searches in local retail stores, I decided to turn to the web for a solution.This particular battery sits perfectly in the DS Lite, and holds its charge for a very long time. <br/> <br/>I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a reasonably priced non-Nintendo option for replacing a dead battery pack.
