Origami Paper Crafts
- Origami comes from the Japanese words for "fold" (ori) and "paper" (kami). The centuries-old craft involves creating intricate designs out of colored paper (specialty origami paper is available but you can use regular paper and even dollar bills for some designs) by folding, cutting or creasing the paper. A variety of crafts may be made out of origami for both decorative and useful purposes.
- Boxes: Although the main focus of origami is usually on the paper creation itself, some origami enthusiasts use the packaging of the origami creation to display their skills. A variety of origami boxes may be made, from simple flat styles to a double compartment box, pentagon, petal box, basket and star shape. Consider creating an origami box to store your origami creatures or to serve as a holder for desk accessories, candy or jewelry.
- Birds: Origami can make nature come alive with a nest full of folded paper birds. The most common origami bird is the crane; other shapes include a flapping bird, pelican, owl and twirling bird. Experienced origami artists may use one color of paper for the bird's body and a contrasting paper or print to represent the bird's feathers or wings.
- Stars: A common origami craft shape is the star, made with a single or multiple pieces of paper. Varieties include the Star of David (Jewish star), compass rose, traditional one-piece star and Stella Marina, plus 3-D versions such as the snowflake, omega, novene and lucky star.

Origami flowers may be created from bright, colorful paper (spritz them with perfume for an authentic scent) in varieties such as a lily, tulip, rose and lotus. 03-28-2011- Other Thoughts: Our school is putting on an origami making night to collect donations for Japan. This paper is exactly what we need. Folds easily, great color assortment, ships quickly, arrives in good condition. My kindergartners have been using it with ease in class for a month. Can't wait to put it to use at the origami stations!
