How to Bend Paper Clips



You can bend paper clips into any number of shapes and use them to make a variety of craft projects, from rings to angels to almost anything you can imagine. One of the best things about deciding to work with paper clips in your projects is that they are cheap and available at almost any corner store. It's amazing to think that the most common style of paper clip, the Gem, has been around since 1892.

• Hold your Gem style paper clip by the curved bent side of the clip, leaving the outside end piece free.
• Here the outside end piece has been bent away from the rest
• Pinch the outside end piece with a pair of needle-nose pliers near the base where it curves into the rest of the clip. Bend the end piece so it extends at a 90 degree angle from the rest of the clip
• Bend each portion of the clip by grasping it at the base of the curve with your pliers bending out from its original shape in 90 degree angles. When you are done, you will have a fairly straight piece of metal (with some bumps in it where the original bends were)
• Bend paper clips against a wood dowel to get the shape you want
• Hold one end of the straightened paper clip across a wooden dowel and use the needle-nose pliers to bend the rest of the clip so it wraps around the dowel. This is the best way to make ring shapes
• Use a small wooden block to put a sharp angled bend in a paper clip by holding one end of the straightened clip to the block and using your needle-nose pliers to bend the remainder to the shape of the block
