How to Buy an Extreme Cold Weather Parka:
- Forget saving money on your purchase. Expect to pay for a durable parka that can survive arctic climates of -60 F.
- Only look at the top of the line Parkas made by lesser retailers. Look at the heaviest, thickest, most expensive jackets made by North Face, Columbia, Burton, etc. Examine the lining, the hood, the strength of the zippers, and the ease with which they could be used in extreme cold. Find a coat with down or duck filled insulation.
- You'll probably find that those coats won't cut it if you are working hard manual labor outdoors in subzero temperatures.
- For a whole other level of high price and performance, check out the high end Canada Goose line of parkas. These cost between $600 -$900 and are actually used at the South Pole and in Northern Alaska and Canada. Canada Goose Parkas are amazingly durable and simple. They aren't very stylish, but can take years of cold weather abuse.
- Remember, a jacket isn't going to save your life with zippers and style. Look for sturdy, long parkas that cover the entire core of the body and are heavily, heavily insulated.
How to Clean Parkas:
Parkas are winter jackets, often made with down feathers or delicate synthetic fibers. As with any other type of clothing containing fragile materials, extra care must be taken during the cleaning process to reduce the risk of damage. While parkas come in a variety of different materials, the cleaning process is essentially the same for all parkas. The process is fairly straightforward, but it requires the use of commercial laundry equipment.- Grab the parka by the shoulders and shake it to remove loose dirt.
- Put the parka in a front-loading washer, which can be found at Laundromats. Washers typically found in homes can be too rough on a down-filled parka.
- Run the washer at its most gentle setting with cold water. Remove the parka after the cycle, and squeeze out water. If the water comes out clear, move on to the next step. If the water appears to be dirty, let the parka go through another rinse cycle.
- Wash the parka with 2/3 cups of a mild detergent. If it's down-filled, use a detergent made specially for down products. Again, set the washer to the gentle cycle and use cold water.
- Remove the parka after the cleaning cycle, and lay it on a flat surface, such as a table. Press a clean, dry towel on the parka to remove as much moisture as possible. The more moisture you get out with this method, the less time you have to wait for the parka to dry in the dryer.
- Fluff the parka if it's down-filled. Put the parka in the dryer, and set the temperature to low. If the parka is down-filled, you must remove it from the dryer every 10 minutes to fluff it.

02-03-2011- Other Thoughts: I've been using this Hooded Mens Parka for over a year and it's gotten dirt, snow, rain, paint, you name it. It still works like a miracle. I love it. I bought this Hiking Mens Parka for the sole purpose of taking it to work but I like it so much I wear it everywhere now, so I'm planning on buying a new one.
