How to Make a Pen Holder:

If you need a quick gift idea or just want to organize your work station, combine your crafting skills with eco-friendly recycling to make a pen holder that is stylish and simple. Make a pen holder with your child and she can give it to a friend or relative this holiday season; make several for yourself and you will never have to hunt for a pen again. You might even find other ways to use this project, including using it for crayons, paint brushes, paper clips or thumb tacks

Instructions

• Choose an empty tin can, such as the kind you buy for soup or vegetables. File down any sharp areas on the can. Remove the label from the can and wash the can with soap and water. Let it dry
• Cut a strip of colorful shelf liner paper, also sometimes called contact paper, to match the height and circumference of the can, adding one extra inch to the length of the circumference. Peel the paper backing off the contact paper and wrap it gently around the can, overlapping the edges
• Add stickers onto the outside of the can. For more texture and options, look in the scrapbooking aisle of your local craft store and choose stick-on embellishments that match your home or office decor or have images of things you enjoy. Add these to the outside of the can
• Fill the can with pens and display it on your desk or shelf

How to Make a Wooden Pen Holder:

• Turn the box upside down on top of a piece of ¼ inch plywood. Trace around the edges of the box onto the plywood
• Cut along the traced line on the plywood
• Drill holes in the cut shape using a ¼-inch drill bit. The holes don't need go on any certain way. Keep the holes ½ inch away from the edge of the lid. Keep them further away if the box edges are larger
• Apply a thin line of liquid nail or wood glue along the top edge of the wooden box. Press the lid to the edge and hold in place for 30 seconds. Wipe away any excess glue with a towel
• Gather small pieces of colorful paper. Cut larger pieces of paper into approximately 1-by-2-inch squares. Use scrapbooking scissors to add a decorative edge to the paper
• Brush a layer of decoupage glue over the box with a foam brush
• Place the paper over the decoupage glue. Smooth with the foam brush. Cover the entire box with the paper
• Apply a thick layer of decoupage glue to the top of the paper. Smooth everything so there are no bumps or bubbles. Allow the box to dry for two hours
