How to Sharpen a Pencil

• Put the lead end of the pencil in the sharpener: Keep the pencil and sharpener in a straight line.
• Twist the pencil clockwise: Sharpen slowly and don't press too hard.
• Turn until you feel less resistance to twisting, or you are satisfied with the sharpness: Make sure the pencil's tip is secure and will not fall out when pressure is applied.
• Pull the pencil out and brush or blow away the shavings: Make sure to blow away from your or other's faces, unless you want stinging eyes.
• Some pencils may be too wide to put in the pencil sharpener: In that case, you may need to use a knife, (see warning below) or teeth, but be careful not to swallow the shavings. (See: external link).

Tips

• If your pencil sharpener will not sharpen the pencil well, check that the space where the pencil tip should go is not blocked by broken graphite (the black part) from the tip of the pencil. If it still will not sharpen well, the blade in the sharpener may be blunt. Do not jam in the pencil too hard. Hold the pencil steady and lightly shave the graphite to a slow smooth point softly.
• Do not try to sharpen crayons, candles, sticks, q-tips, paper clips, or anything that is not a pencil. It will not sharpen.
• Melting or firing out jammed matter will take time away from maintaining resources and simply provide undeveloped and wasted learning time for students arriving in the classroom with their not sharp pencil.
• If your pencil breaks very regularly, you may be sharpening it too much or the graphite in your pencil may have been broken from a hard knock. Or, you may be pressing too hard on the paper. Or again, you may be jamming the pencil in like limb and garden shredder.
• Another type of mechanical pencil sharpener has a crank, which you turn clockwise while pushing the pencil in slightly. (operational phrase being 'pushing' slightly)
• You can further sharpen many pencils by drawing them against fine sandpaper or an emery board.
