How to Choose a Pencil:
- Take a trip to the local art store and try several pencils. The correct pencil is the one that you enjoy using the most
- Select a pencil with soft lead if you want dark, fat lines that are easy to make and you don't mind smudges or frequent sharpening
- Select a pencil with harder lead if you want smudgeproof, precise lines and a pencil that doesn't require sharpening as often
- Ask the art store clerk about any pencils that don't have a grade indicating the softness or weight of the lead. Leads are graded, hardest to softest, 4H, 2H, H, HB, F, B, B2 and B4
- Consider a lead holder and a selection of changeable leads if you want to be able to change the weight of the lead, keep a very sharp point and enjoy using a special gadget
- Select a mechanical pencil with replaceable leads and erasers if you enjoy gadgets and don't want to carry a pencil sharpener or lead pointer and a separate eraser
- Choose a pencil or leads that work well with the sketch paper that you select. You'll get rips using hard lead on fragile paper, and lots of dust and smudging using soft lead on rough paper
- Select a soft lead if your sketch paper might become damp while you're sketching, since harder lead won't make marks on wet paper
- Remember to pick up a separate eraser. Most drawing pencils don't have one on the end. Make sure it works with the lead you've chosen - very soft and very hard leads are both difficult to erase
- Remember to pick up a pencil sharpener or lead pointer. Make sure it works with the pencil or lead holder you've chosen
How to Sharpen Pencils:
Electric and Hand Sharpening
- Use an electric sharpener for easy sharpening and the thinnest range of points
- Insert the pencil into the appropriate sized hole, exert a minimum of pressure and check your pencil tip after five seconds
- Reinsert for that extra-sharp point
- Employ a hand sharpener for an effortless point, but be prepared to give up some control
- Insert the pencil into the appropriate sized hole, crank the handle for about 15 seconds with minimum pressure, then check the tip
- Reinsert for a sharper point
Razor Sharpening
- Choose the razor sharpening method for the most control. It's usually employed for fine drawing pencils or when mechanical means are unavailable
- Hold the pencil with the tip toward the ground
- Hold the razor at a 45-degree angle from the tip of the pencil
- Begin at the lip. Press firmly but lightly from wood's painted edge toward the graphite, shaving equally around the circumference
- Keep shaving thin slices equally around the exposed graphite
- Finish by sharpening the graphite itself, putting your choice of points on the tip

01-12-2011- Other Thoughts: I bought these Wooden Pencil for my daughter as a gift, all I can say is wow! They are truly beautiful. The colors are vibrant and the pencils are a joy to use. I know that they are towards the expensive end of the spectrum, but, wow, you get what you pay for.

Based on the description of this product, it appeared that this set would meet my needs. I have been using this set for a few weeks and this product has met my expectations.

04-15-2011- Other Thoughts: I haven't used Drum Pencil a lot yet, but once or twice have used them. I really like these. They hold a nice sharp point for detail work. They came highly recommended in several of the art books I use. I use these in conjunction with a set of 120 Prismacolor premier pencils.
