How to Create a Picture Family Tree:

Display the results of your genealogy research in picture format. If you have pictures of many of your ancestors, you can make a family tree with the photos and names displayed. You can make the chart more attractive by adding a picture of a tree in the background. You can print it yourself or order a photo-quality print suitable for framing, depending on your preference. This would make a nice item for your wall at home or a gift for a relative.

• Instructions
• Draw a diagram of your family tree for reference. Make a box around each name you have a photo for to get an idea of where the photos will go and how they might fit.
• Decide on a format. A family tree diagram can either be vertical or horizontal. A vertical tree will have the current family member at the bottom, with the ancestors branching out toward the top. A horizontal tree can be read from left to right, with the current member on the left and ancestors branching to the right, or it could even branch to both sides, with the mother's ancestors on one side and the father's ancestors on the other. Each generation will have twice as many members as the previous generation, so the chart can get crowded fast. Depending on the size, you will only be able to display three or four generations.
• Determine the number of generations and the size of the overall chart. Consider the size each photo will be; they should all be the same size unless you want the most recent generation to be slightly larger. Make sure that you have room for the names of every person, and decide what other information to include. For example, you may want to include the dates of birth and death for each person, and you could also include the date of marriage. Draw out a grid to make sure that you have room for the number of generations that you intend to include.
• Create an image or page of the desired size in your image editing or scrapbooking software. This will be the size of your final family tree chart. The size is determined by the size you will be able to print using your chosen print method (see step 10 below) and your preference. Choose a background color or pattern. You might want to find a picture of a tree for the background. Plan out the family tree, using a grid to help line everything up. Pick colors that will allow the words to be legible, or plan to put the names in boxes so that the text is in a color that contrasts with the color of its background.
• Place the photos in the correct places. Resize them so that they are all the same size. If you are using a program such as Photoshop, put each photo on its own layer so that you can resize and move them around without affecting the other elements.
• Type in each name and the other information you wish to add, such as dates. Once you get one block of text in the right size and font, copy it and edit the copy for the next name, and continue this process to type all of the names. Put the names in place, even if you don't have photos for some of the ancestors.
• Draw lines to represent the relationships. Again, this is something you can copy and paste once you have a set of lines for one parent and child set.
• Sit back, and look at your family tree. Check to see that it is legible and looks the way you want it to look. Add a title and any other details you want.
• Save the file in the native file format of your image editing software so that you can edit it again if necessary. (You should actually save it many times while you're working on it.) Save it again as an image file, either a JPEG or PNG file, in the highest quality available and at a resolution of 300 dots per inch.
• Print your family tree. If it is larger than your printer can print, you have a couple of options. Take the file to a company that can print it for you. Large office supply stores and copy centers can do this, as can shipping stores that have document services, such as the UPS Store and Kinkos. Another option is to upload it to a website that prints photos and have them print it. Look for one that prints poster-sized photos if you want a large size.
