How to Make a Picnic Blanket
Lazy summer days often call for a picnic lunch, spread out under a tree or in a shady clearing. Picnic tables are often unavailable in the most ideal settings, but this doesn't have to stand in the way of your perfect picnic meal. Spread out a handmade picnic blanket, and you'll have a soft and waterproof ground covering on which to spread your tasty treats
- Pre-wash the cotton flannel fabric to make sure that it has already shrunk before using it. Dry the fabric and iron it to create a smooth surface
- Cut two strips of flannel that measure 52 inches by 26-1/2 inches. Lay the strips together with the right sides, or most colorful sides, touching. Pin along one long edge and sew it together using a 1/2-inch seam. Open up the folded fabric and press the seam open
- Cut the flannel tablecloth to a 52-inch square. Most commercial vinyl tablecloths are 52 inches wide, so simply make a square to the same length as its width
- Lay the cut tablecloth fabric on the table in front of you with the vinyl side down and the flannel backing facing up. Lay the seamed piece of flannel fabric on top of the tablecloth fabric with the seam up
- Pin around all four edges of the fabric. Sew three sides of the blanket completely, using a 1/2-inch seam. Sew the fourth side, stopping when you are 12 inches from the end of the edge
- Turn the blanket right side out by pushing the inside out through the opening that you left in the outer seam. After you have pushed the entire blanket right side out, use a chopstick or other blunt stick to push into the corners. This will help to make your blanket corners sharp instead of rounded and bunchy. You will now have a blanket with flannel on both sides and vinyl inside for waterproofing
- Pin the opening together and sew it closed using a top stitch right along the folds
- Cut two pieces of cotton webbing 8 inches long. Fold each short end of the strips over 1/4 inch and stitch them down. This will create a top and bottom side of the webbing. Sew a 1-inch-long piece of self-fastening tape (hook side) lengthwise onto one end of the webbing strip, right near the end and on the top side. Sew a dot of self-fastening tape (loop side) onto the bottom side of the webbing right at the other end. Repeat this step with the other strip of webbing
- Lay the blanket with the tablecloth flannel side up. Measure 5 inches from the right edge along the top and place a pin at this point. Measure 15 inches from the first pin along the top edge and put a second pin in at this point
- Pin the webbing ends onto the blanket. Place each piece of webbing at a point where you put a pin. Lay the webbing so that the first 2 inches of the webbing with the self-fastening tape strip are lying on top of the blanket and the rest of the strip that ends in the self-fastening tape dot is hanging up off the top. Stitch along both sides of both strips to secure them to the blanket
- Fold the blanket in half with the tablecloth flannel on the outside and the webbing strips at the top. Lay the folded blanket down and start rolling the blanket up at the end opposite the webbing. Wrap the webbing around the rolled blanket and secure it with the self-fastening tape dot to the self-fastening tape strip

05-26-2011- Other Thoughts: This Waterproof Picnic is the perfect size and very long. Only wish it was a bit softer but it serves it's purpose to be able to lay on damp grass at outdoor concerts.

06-11-2011- Other Thoughts: This is a great Waterproof Picnic Mat! The one is a good material so you don't get wet when sitting on damp grass. The top is a soft material. The blanket is lightly padded to keep you comfortable from hard ground and small pebbles. It's machine washable. It folds up easily to fit back in the matching tote bag that it comes packed in. It's large enough to hold two adults, a baby and all of the baby's play things. I'm so glad I purchased this and I look forward to many years of use.

06-02-2011- Other Thoughts: This is an excellent purchase! I was given one as a gift and took it to an outdoor concert with my husband and newborn and our friends who have toddlers loved it so much we bought them one for a holiday gift. Picnic Mat is terrific because the grass does not stick to it so you can shake it off and the backside is water resistant for that recently watered grass that everyone hates to put blankets on! Funny thing is, even wet grass does not stick to it that much! I love how I can fold it up into a carrying case and put sunscreen, etc into the side pocket. It also washes perfectly! I will be giving this as a gift for every new family!

04-30-2011- Other Thoughts: Picnic Blanket does the job and has great patterns. I like the carry bag and although I will never remember how to fold it to get it in, it is simple and I keep the instructions in the side pocket of the carrier. Great to keep in your car and have ready for whenever the mood strikes.. especially with kiddies!
