How to Change a Nintendo DS Case?

While the Nintendo DS Lite offers gamers limited color selection options, third parties sell Nintendo DS cases designed to trick out your handheld gaming device. From transparent cases that offer a see-through view of the Nintendo DS's inner workings to bling-worthy rhinestone-studded cases, gamers can customize the DS to suit their personal style. Of course, finding a Nintendo DS case that's aesthetically appealing is only the beginning of the challenge. The intricate process of changing your Nintendo DS case can be intimidating, but with attention to detail, you can install your customized case and amp up your gaming experience.

• Remove the battery cover. Use your Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the battery cover. Next, lift the GBA cover. Finally, remove the battery pack and place all removed items into a bowl, so as not to lose parts during the case changing process.
• Remove the bottom case to unveil the inside workings of the DS. Refer to Figure 2 in the diagram in order to remove the screws, using the tri-wing screwdriver to remove the red-circled screws, a Phillips screwdriver to remove the green screws, and a flathead screwdriver to remove screws marked with blue. Once all screws have been released, lift the lid of the case bottom.
• Release the motherboard. Remove the screw securing the motherboard. Examine the wire orientations. Notice the Wi-fi wires which run from the Wi-fi jack under the DS card adapter and terminate on the other side. Refer to Figure 1 and note the wires originating at the microphone jack. Finally, examine the Left and Right triggers and their attached wires. Note these wire positions for future steps so that you can reposition the DS wires in their original orientation as you reconstruct the gaming device in future steps. Remove the antenna and microphone wires to release the Nintendo DS motherboard.
• Complete the motherboard release. Flip the motherboard away from you towards the table. Remove the mic and antenna jacks. Use a flathead screwdriver to apply gentle pressure underneath the jacks to release the motherboard. Gently snap the black bar which secures the flatwire to the motherboard towards you, using extremely gentle force as the flatwire is fragile and breaks easily. Remove the flatwire to release the motherboard completely.
• Free the top screen from bottom case. Push the flatwire into the narrow slot in the upper left of your view in order to free the wire. Pull the top screen back carefully, which will cause the flatwire to slide out of the slot.
• Replace the DS triggers and mechanisms. Push the wire out of the "U"-shaped slot of the trigger and lift each trigger out from the case. Attach your new triggers, taking care that the inner spring mechanism is oriented correctly as shown in Figure 3, placing Piece A back into the slot and ensuring Piece B retains tension.
• Set aside your case-in-progress and ready your new case with components. First, attach the stylus holder to your new case. Next, replace the battery screw tap and the GBA slot, gently prying them free from the old case with your crafting knife.
• Transfer the power light onto the new case. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two securing screws and lift the power light from the old case. Guide the angle adjuster, located underneath, out of its seat using pliers.
• Release the top case panel. Use your art knife to remove the panel and peel back the screen cover. Remove the four screws which are securing the top panel. Orient the face of the panel like a book and push away from you with your thumbs on top of the piece. Release the panel, listening for a click that will indicate success.
• Dislodge and transfer the LCD mechanisms to the new case. Turn the top panel over so that the speakers, flatwire and antenna are revealed. Remove the speakers and washers in order to gently snap the LCD panel from its seat. Remove the LCD mechanisms and place them into the new case.
• Begin the reassembly process into your new DS case, following Steps 9 through 1 in reverse. Ensure that when replacing the flatwire, you twist it 1 1/2 times in order to seat it into its cavity. Take care that you slip the microphone (white) wire and the antenna wire into the cavity as you reassemble the DS.
• Transfer the LCD panel and speakers into the new case. Gently secure the LCD panel with light pressure. Take care to reinsert all wires into their original positions. Ensure that when you resecure the top screen, you replace the "o-ring" that came off during top screen removal. Make sure to insert the ring through the black and white wires and the flat wire as you replace it, pushing it into the cavity until it secures. Once the o-ring is reseated, secure the top cover to hold internal mechanisms inside.
• Begin replacing the final hardware. Reattach the flatwire so that it is secured to the DS motherboard. Replace all screws and their rubber covers, wherever applicable. Join the top panel to the bottom panel and reinstall the flatwire gently. Secure the back of the bottom case, referring to the Figure 2 diagram for screw placement.
