How to protect your Nintendo DS Lite from damage

So, you went out and spent $130 (or more for one of those game and system bundles) for a shiny new DS Lite. They are a really cool little system aren't they? There's only one little problem with these technological wonders, they are portable. That means carrying them around in your hands, in bags, in purses etc. When you pick something up off the table and start carrying it everywhere with you the chance for damage jumps exponentially. Be assured, no matter how careful you are, at some point your little DS is going to get dropped, squished, rubbed against something, scratched by something, exposed to dust and maybe even sprayed or even imersed in liquid. All of those things can spell disaster for it. Here are some ways to make it last as long as possible.

• Look at your DS and determine if you have the older, larger DS original or the thinner, newer DS Lite. If you look at the back of the device, it'll say either DS or DS Lite on it. Another good clue is that the power switch for the DS Lite is on the narrow side while the switch for the DS original is on one of the longer sides of the case. This matters since some accessories only work for DS Lite and not the DS original
• Go to your nearest store that sells Nintendo DSs. This could be Walmart, Kmart, Target, Toys R US, Best Buy, Circuit City, EB, Gamestop or a number of other places. Places like Gamestop, Gamecrazy etc. tend to have the best selection of accessories. Check out their sales fliers too if you get them in the paper or check their websites before you go as sometimes,certain stores are having sales on DS stuff
• You'll see a lot of stuff, but look for these things first in this order of importance: screen protectors, hard sided carrying cases, DS skins or armor, game cartridge cases. The rest of the stuff is neat but not needed for protection
• Screen Protectors: The cool little dual screens of the DS are what set it apart from all other portable gaming devices. They are pretty resistant to jabbing with the stylus (never use anything else but an official Nintendo DS stylus though as pens, pencils etc can damage the screen) but they are vulnerable to scratches. Once a screen is scratched, there is no fixing it. It costs almost as much as a new DS to replace a screen and you have to mail it off to Nintedo as there aren't any shops I know of that work on them on site. A simple and fairly cheap way to prevent scratches is to get screen protectors. When buying them, look for words like "compatible with" or "for" Nintendo DS Lite (unless you have the original DS in which case you'll probably have to get screen protectors for the Sony PSP and cut them to size as the screens for DS and DS Lite are different sizes). The best screen protectors have the adhesive only on the edges of the film and not all the way across. This is better because the ones with the adhesive all the way across are harder to put on without having air bubbles between the film and the screen. No matter how hard I try, I can never get every air bubble out with those cardboard applicators that come with those kids of screen protectors
• Just like laptop computers, DSs are much safer in their own, specially made case than just tossed in knapsacks, backpacks, purses etc. A good hard-sided DS case has padding and is shaped in a way that protects your DS from shock of drops and from being squeezed too hard. You can find ones that are even made of aluminum for less than $20 at some stores. Most hard cases even have room for carrying extra games and styluses, maybe even room for the AC adapter so you can recharge your DS on the go. Vaultz brand makes some of the best hard sided cases I've seen for portable electronics. They have plenty of room, are made of metal and aren't all that expensive either
• DS Skins vs Armor: There are lots of cute DS skins that add personality to your DS while also protecting the shell of the system from scratches. However, I prefer actual padded armor for my DS Lite. Nerf makes a great armor set that snaps on the DS without any tools. It has the trademark thick, dense, yet light Nerf foam to protect against drops and scratches and they cost less than $20. They are not too intrusive either. I find that holding and playing on my DS is actually more comfortable with the Nerf Armor on it
• Game Cartridge cases: One of the main selling points of the DS over the PSP when it comes to portability are the games. They come in good ole fashioned cartridges which are much more durable and resistant to damage from scratching, fingerprints etc. than the little UMD discs of the PSP. However, they are almost as small as a digital camera memory card and almost as easy to lose. Keep them organized in DS game cases. The best ones are thin and hold three cartridges. These cases fit very nicely into the Vaultz carrying cases and some of the other hard sided cases I've seen. They also make the package of games bigger and harder to lose. They also protect the games from getting wet which is still a big no no with these tough little cartridges
• Installing the screen protectors is not too hard if you get the ones with the adhesive on the edges only. If you get the other ones, you need to apply the film to the top of the screen and then slowly press it down on the rest of the screen while rubbing with the cardboard applicator to rub out the bubbles. Installing the DS armor is pretty easy too. Just lay the DS inside the armor case and gently press it into place until the tabs snap onto it
• Your DS or DS Lite is now safe from most hazards. The only remaining one is water or other liquids. I have seen water-tight cases that have gaskets out there, mostly at places like Frys Electronics and Dicks Sporting goods. These cases are made for cameras, MP3 players etc and not the DS but if you find one that is close in size to one of the other hard sided DS cases, it'll work too. I don't usually worry too much about using one of these, but if I were to ever take my DS on a boat or camping, I would get one
