How to Repair Electrical Wire?
Electrical wiring can typically become damaged during a home renovation project or even through age and typical wear and tear. It is never safe to operate a damaged electrical wire, so repair is needed the moment it is discovered. Cutting out the damaged section and splicing in a new piece will complete the project, as well as keep your electrical wiring up to code.
- Turn the power off at the main service panel to the circuit with the damaged wiring. Circuit breakers are typically numbered on the inside of the door panel to help you locate the correct one to turn off.
- Using the flashlight to see the damaged wiring, touch the test probe against it to determine that the power is off. If no lights on the probe come on, the wiring is "dead" and safe to work on.
- 3Determine the extent of the damaged wire and cut several inches away on ether side of that section. Remove the cut piece.
- Strip off three inches of the outer insulation on each end of the existing wire and then strip one inch of insulation off each wire inside the cable.
- Measure the distance between the two wires and add 3 to 5 extra inches to allow for slack so it is not pulled too taut. Strip three inches of the outer insulation on each end of the new wire and then strip one inch of insulation off each wire inside the cable.
- Attach the new wire to the existing wire. Twist together the same colored wires in a clockwise direction. Twist a wire nut on each wire connection.
- Wrap each wire nut with electrical tape, starting one inch below the bottom of the wire nut, and working up to the top. This will further seal the connections.
- Turn the power back on. Touch the test probe to the wiring to check for power.
How to Splice a Power Cord?
Power cords can break in the middle of any project. Repairing it should be a temporary solution, because permanently using a spliced power cord can be hazardous. The power cord should be replaced as soon as possible. Splicing a power cord for use in a dry location can be accomplished in a few minutes by following a basic process.
- Remove the cord from its power source. Cut the cord fully in half with the pocketknife to reveal a clean cut to the copper strands.
- Strip about two to three inches of the outer insulation from the cords, exposing the black, white and green wires on both ends. Some cords may not have a green grounding wire in the cable assembly.
- Using the wire strippers, strip the black, white and green insulation to expose three-quarters of an inch to one inch of the copper wire. Twist the bare copper wires together using your fingers in the following order: Attach the two black wires to each other, as well as the white wires. The green wires, if used, must also be attached to each other.
- Wrap three inches of electrical tape securely around the black wires. Cover the bare copper to insulate the connection. Perform the same operation on the white and green pairs.
- Hold all the wires together and insulate the small bundle with the black tape. Attach one end of the tape to the outer insulation of the cord. Begin 1 inch from the exposed black, white and green wires. Cover the insulated wires by wrapping the tape around them in a continuous fashion until you have reached the other end of the outer insulation. This temporary splice will be sufficient for operation in a dry area.

03-17-2011- Other Thoughts: I could have sworn I thought I was buying an original Apple cable when I ordered this item. It's not. It's a generic cable which explains the low price. But it works just fine, so no issues with the product. Good value for money. It would help if they clearly identified this as a generic cable, I would have probably still bought it, but at least I would have known what I'm buying.

03-02-2011- Other Thoughts: My cords arrived in 2 days thanks to amazon prime. They were neatly packaged. Worked just like an apple usb cord is supposed to. Not too sure if they are OEM but they work. Great price for the cords too.
