The Advantages of an Electric Infrared Radiant Heater in Place of a Conventional Electric Heater
Electric space heaters can save significant energy and expense when used appropriately. A conventional electric heater is better than an infrared radiant heater at warming up a room quickly, but infrared radiant heaters have several other advantages
- Space Heater Uses: An electric space heater is useful when a room is in constant use while the rest of the house is not. The temperature in the rest of the house can then be kept very low. It also is useful when a room does not obtain sufficient heat from the central heating system
- Infrared Radiant Heaters: Infrared radiant heaters heat the person in the room more than the air in the room, similar to sitting in the sunshine on a cool day. The Washington State University Extension Energy Program reports that many people prefer the feeling of warmth from a radiant heater compared to other types of heaters
- Efficiency Considerations: An infrared radiant heater is more efficient than a conventional space heater or a central heating system for one person sitting in one particular location, such as at a desk or workbench. They don't have to heat the air around you to keep you warm
- Convenience in Location: Because electric infrared heaters warm up the person more than the room air, they can be installed anywhere in the room, including corners at the ceiling, pointed at a specific area. Conventional heaters are placed on the floor because heat rises in the air
- Quiet: Quiet functionality is another advantage of an electric infrared radiant heater. Unlike a conventional electric heater, it doesn't require a fan to work
How to Buy Portable Electric Space Heaters
Keep cold weather at bay this winter with portable electric space heaters. The US Department of Energy states that using small portable heaters can be less expensive to operate than central heating. If your furnace is faltering, consider supplementing central heat with a portable electric space heater. Here's what you need to know about buying portable space heaters
- Use a BTU calculator to determine how many BTUs are needed to heat a room. This step entails measuring the rooms the portable electric space heaters will be used in. Some manufacturers include a rough BTU vs. Room size guide on their boxes. This may seem like a lot of work but it will ensure effective heat production from the space heater. Otherwise, you'll end up with a space heater that is either too hot or too cold for your room. (See the Resources section for a link to a BTU calculator.)
- Decide between radiant or convection heat. Convection space heaters are great for making the entire room toasty while radiant space heaters provide localized heat to a small area of a room. Infrared space heaters are relatively new, but not well reviewed by consumer experts and do not appear to offer good value for their high price
- Look for a long electric cord for maximum portability. It's easier and safer to avoid extension cords with portable electric space heaters. If an extension cord must be used, be sure to use a high gauge, high quality one. The US Department of Energy recommends the use of extension cords 14 gauge or higher with space heaters
- Check the box for the UL symbol to be sure portable electric space heaters conform to safety standards set by Underwriters Laboratories
- Look for extra safety features such as automatically shut off in case of overheating or if the space heater falls over. Note: Well reviewed models are listed in the Resources section below
- Expect to pay between $50 and $100 for a space heater

04-06-2011- Other Thoughts: So far this product is performing to meet all my expectations. <br/>Wanted an inexpensive way to take the chill off my manufactured home in Florida,which has endured some very cold weather too. <br/>I like the tower design, and the fact that it oscillates,helps too. <br/>For the price, don't be afraid to try it! No problems so far. Running this for an hour or so in the chilly morning,there is no need to turn on the main heat source.

04-20-2011- Other Thoughts: I bought this to use in a spare bedroom (11'x11') when company comes. They have been very happy with it, and so have I. It is the perfect size to store when not in use. It is quiet and works well. The price was perfect as well. Would highly recommend for small areas.

01-12-2011- Other Thoughts: I bought the digital Lasko heater years ago and it has worked like a champ for at least 5 years. As it ages it gets a little louder but I never had any problems with it. It provides plenty of heat and the temperature is adjustable. It doesn't regulate the temperature perfectly but it does keep it within about a 5* range of what you set it on. I am now looking to get another one. I love to use it in the bathroom in the winter or even in my living room to save money instead of cranking up the main heater. My husband uses it in the office at night. We love it!

03-16-2011- Other Thoughts: This is a great heater that will warm up a small space really well. I was looking for something to help heat up my small apartment, and this was perfect. The oscillation is also a nice and handy feature, but after a few days of use the motor started getting somewhat loud. It would only make noises when oscillating. I would definitely recommend this product.
