How to Design Women's Purses?
- Sketch out your purse design. Think about purses and bags you like, in terms of shape, size and structure. You may even want to measure the approximate size of a favorite purse or two when designing purses
- Design the inside of your purse. Pockets, key fobs, and organized storage can make your purse much more user friendly and practical. Consider what you typically carry as you design purses. If you are designing purses to sell, think about what most women carry
- Draft your pattern. Once you have your purse design in place and a rough idea of measurements, draw out your pattern on your pattern tracing paper or newsprint. Be sure to allow 1/2 inch on each side for seam allowances
- Write up basic instructions as part of your purse design. While this may seem unnecessary, if you want to make the purse you've designed today again, it can be quite helpful. Include the types of interfacing and fasteners used and when they should be applied
- Cut your purse design from your inner and outer fabrics. Be sure to interface all of your pattern pieces for a professional look. Choose heavyweight interfacing for a structured bag or lightweight interfacings for a more casual and floppy appearance. Finish any pocket edges and apply to the lining. Assemble your purse design into a finished and usable purse that you will enjoy for years to come. Consider making a matching notebook cover, planner cover, or wallet to go with your purse design
How to Make a Clutch Purse?
Creating the Clutch Purse:- Cut two pieces of fabric, each 10-inches wide by 7-inches tall. These will be the front and back of the purse
- Cut two more 10-by-7-inch pieces of fabric for the lining
- Cut two pieces of fusible interfacing, each 10-by-7 inches. Iron one piece of interfacing to the wrong side of each lining, following the directions on the package
- Place one outside fabric piece and one lining right sides together. Stitch them along the sides and lower edge, leaving the top edge open
- Turn the pieces right side out, then turn the open edges of the outside and lining under 1/2 inch and press them flat. Topstitch along the pressed edges using matching thread
- Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for the other fabric and lining pieces
- Place the front and back of the purse together, with the linings facing out. Stitch along the sides and bottom edge, then turn the purse right side out
Make the Flap:
- Cut a piece of fabric 10-inches wide by 7-inches tall. This will be the flap that covers the top of the purse
- Cut a piece of interfacing that's 10-by-7 inches. Iron it to the wrong side of the flap fabric
- Fold the flap fabric in half right sides together. Stitch along the sides, leaving the edge opposite the fold open
- Turn the open edges over 1/2 inch and press them flat. Turn the flap right side out
- Line up the folded edge of the flap with the top edge of the back of the purse. Pin them together, making sure you catch both layers of the flap in the pins
- Sew the flap to the top edge of the purse, making sure you don't sew the purse closed
- Place the bumpy half (stud) of the snap near the top edge of the open flap. Sew it in place like you would a button
- Place the indented half (socket) of the snap on the front of the purse, making sure to line them up with the snaps on the flap when it is closed. Sew them in place like you would buttons, without sewing the purse closed
