How to Clean an RC Car:



Radio-controlled cars are truly for all ages. Chances are that if you have one of these cars, you don't just use it inside of your clean home. You probably take the car outside. You may even race the cars against others. Some people even take their RC cars and trucks "off-road." This can make your car very dirty. As with an actual car, it's important to an owner to keep his or her car looking great. Cleaning your car can also keep it running smoothly. Here is how to clean an RC Car

• Begin by removing the tires and body of the RC car. This is the best way to clean the tires and body and also allows you to clean the inside of the car more thoroughly
• Use the can of compressed air to blow away any dirt or dust which may have accumulated in your RC car. This does more than just make the cleaning process easier for you. Using the compressed air can blow away pieces of dirt which you may have missed or been unable to reach. Be cautious when using the compressed air around your engine, though, as you don't want to cause any damage
• Clean your car with the toothbrush in any spots that you can reach. Some people just make the toothbrush damp when doing this while others actually dip it in a cleaner (Easy-Off is known for removing grease and grime). You can also leave the toothbrush dry if your goal is to simply "chip away" the dirt that may be stuck to your car
• Use a rag or towel and a gentle soap to wash the tires and body of the car. You can actually submerge these in water if you wish but it's probably not necessary in order to get the items clean. Since these are no longer attached to the RC car, you can get them wet without having to worry about causing damage to any electrical parts of the car. Make sure to completely dry them, though, before reattaching them
• Dampen a separate towel and go over the inside of the RC car before reattaching the body and tires. You may have chipped away the dirt with your toothbrush but it can still remain in the car. This towel or rag will pick up the dirt and remove it from the RC car. Be sure that the towel isn't too wet, though, as you don't want moisture to linger on the inside of the car

Tips & Warnings

• Place your car in front of a fan to dry it after you've finished cleaning. This will remove any excess moisture
• Be careful when using the toothbrush that you don't pull apart something accidentally when cleaning the inside of the RC car. This is why it's a good idea to only clean the visual parts of the car (after taking the body and wheels off)
• This article is only for basic cleaning of a RC car. Unless you are an expert or know what you're doing, you should not attempt to clean any parts of the engine of your RC car as you could permanently damage the engine and thus ruin your car

Instructions on How to Build a Model Car:

Building a plastic model car is sometimes literally a snap and other times a complex process. All model kits come with instructions, but if you have lost the instructions or if you are building a car for the first time, a few strategies, techniques, and tips exist that will help. While every car and kit is different, the basic process remains the same. If you operate in stages, have a little patience and take time with the details, you will improve your results dramatically.

• Wash the parts of the kit in warm soapy water gently by hand to remove oils and mold release agents, keeping the pieces on the plastic tree
• Dry by hand carefully and air dry when necessary
• Separate out the chrome and clear plastic parts and set aside, away from glue and paint until you are ready to use them. Do not apply chrome and clear parts until the final stages
• Determine the order of sub-assemblies. If you have directions, follow the order the directions call for. If not, assemble the engine, lower frame, wheels and axles, interior and exterior in separate sections in that order. Do steps 5 through 10 for each sub-assembly before moving on to the next sub-assembly
• Clip parts off the plastic tree with diagonal pliers or similar clippers as close to the part as possible
• Trim off excess plastic with a hobby knife and sand away any jagged edges before assembling parts with fine-grit sandpaper or a fine-grit Emory board
• Test fit the parts, trimming and filing a little at a time to get a clean, tight fit
• Wipe away all dust and particles with a clean cloth before gluing
• Put a few drops of quick-set cyanoacrylate glue into a clean bottle cap when you are ready to assemble parts of the car
• Dip the tip of the toothpick into the glue and use the toothpick to apply glue to the edges of parts to adhere them. Spray a small amount of CA accelerator along the edges to speed up the process if you like, but do not use on chrome or clear plastic pieces
• Fill gaps as necessary with two-part putty by mixing the putty and applying with fingers, toothpicks, or other handy tools, smoothing over the edges as you go. Allow to set for several hours and when hardened, you can trim it up with a hobby knife and sand paper
• Spread a drop cloth or newspaper over an open-air work area
• Place the sub-assemblies on the newspaper
• Apply a coat of aerosol primer to each sub-assembly at a distance of about 8 to 10 inches from the parts
• Allow to dry, rotate and repaint until all parts, except chrome and clear pieces, have a coat of primer
• Paint the exterior with a gloss color of your choice and the interior with a flat color suited to the car in the same manner
• Set the engine in place on the frame of the car with CA glue first unless otherwise directed by your instructions. Apply chrome parts to the engine if you have them at this point
• Set the interior in place with CA glue. Any additional detail painting or chrome interior parts should be applied now
• Set the clear plastic windshields and light globes into the exterior parts using CA glue in very small amounts, if necessary
• Set the exterior on the frame with CA glue
• Apply the wheels in the final stage of construction
