Facts About Screws

    Thread Screw Adapter

Screws are tools that are used in many building projects. If you are planning a project that requires screws, it's a good idea to become familiar with screws and their purpose

    • Features: A screw is a simple tool that consists of a metal head and shaft. The shaft has an inclined plane that spirals around it either counterclockwise or clockwise. This inclined plane is called the thread of the screw
    • Function: Screws are most commonly used to fasten one object to another. Different screws do different jobs. A jackscrew can lift heavy objects. A good example is the jack that is used to lift a car to fix a flat tire. A vice is another type of screw
    • Sizing: Screws come in different sizes that are indicated by a number on the box. Screws do not change in length as the sizing number goes up. As the number increases, screws become wider and thicker
    • Driver: The driver of the screw refers to the type of indentation at the head of the screw. The two most common types of drivers are the flathead and the crosshead. The flathead consists of a straight indentation, while the crosshead has a cross-shaped indentation
    • Pitch: The pitch of a screw refers to the degree of the thread, or inclined plane. The pitch of a screw is determined by a number, just like the size

    How Does a Screw Work?

    • Simple Machine: In physical science terms, a screw is one of six classical simple machines. One of its components is another simple machine--an inclined plane. An inclined plane is a flat surface whose edges are at differing heights. The threads of a screw are made of one long inclined plane which is wound around a shank or cylinder (or merely wound in a cylindrical shape, as in the case of a corkscrew). The inclination of the plane allows it to fasten more easily as well as improving the holding power of the screw
    • Wedge: The tip of the screw is often pointed, which causes it to act as a wedge. A wedge is another type of simple machine, one which operates by separating objects, creating space between them. The cylindrical wedge tip of a screw creates a hole in a piece of wood (or other material) for the screw to be wound into. The sharper the tip of the screw, the less force it takes for it to create a hole
    • Threads: Once the tip of the screw has created a small hole, the threads of the screw weave into the object to be fastened. The threads may be wound into other existing thread grooves within a hole, or they may cut their own grooves to rest in. A screw is fastened using rotational force (the spinning of a screwdriver). The threads resting within the grooves creates a mechanical bind which will strongly link objects on a plane perpendicular to the length of the screw. In engineering terms, this is known as converting torque to linear force
    • The strength of a screw's hold is dependent upon the width of the threads and the distance between them. The closer and wider the threads, the stronger the hold will be. However, more threads require more rotations to attach the screw, while wider threads require more force in the rotations

Good choice!

This little chunk of brass may not look like much, but if you're using studio equipment for your photography, you're going to need a couple of these babies. Be careful when you order one, though. This one goes from 3/8 inch female to 1/4 inch male adapter. Manfrotto makes a reverse of this one (see below). There are cheaper substitutes than these made by Manfrotto, but I don't recommend you buy them. If you're going to to put a flash or studio light or some other piece of equipment costing your hundreds or even over a thousand dollars, spend the extra few bucks and get a good one that will last. It sounds silly to say so much about a little brass adapter, but these go on smoothly and easily. Oh, and get yourself at least two of each when you order them. You'll use them eventually or will be irritated when you can't find your one doohickey.

Good!

This alows you to add a tripod head on top of a hiking staff. The staffs have a 1/4 screw and this converts to the 3/8 so you can use a pro head on top of a staff.

I like it!

This screw adapter does exactly what it is supposed to, and does it leaving you assured with peace of mind. I use this adapter to mount a Manfrotto 322RC2 Joystick Head Short ballhead to my Slik tripod. I decided not to go with a cheaper adapter since I was going to be mounting this ballhead to my tripod and putting my DSLR on top of it. I didn't want to have to worry about it possible falling off because of a cheap adapter, and this certainly puts that to rest for me. It seems really well made and all my connections are tight (part on tripod and in ballhead mount) and it supports the ballhead/DSLR perfectly.

A good deal!

1. The sizes are standard, which is why I can combine with the fastener so well.
2. Having a screw on the inside and the outside allows for a nice mechanism to do something like I have (different than it's original design).
3. The fastener can be screwed in from either side, which is something I wasn't sure about. So glad it does work!

This simple connector works great to bridge between the smaller threads of my monopod to the larger threads of my Ball Head.

Excellent!

Not much to be said: Unit is an adaptor between a 1/4' female fitting and a 3/8" male fitting. This adaptor is compact, well built, fits perfectly, and does its intended job very well without taking up any space.

Cool item!

This product perfectly mated my Manfrotto ball head to my Slick tripod. I would buy again and suggest to others--absolutely. A bargain for the quality.
