How to Use a Hand Sewing Machine:

Hand sewing machines, also known as handheld sewing machines, are great for quick repairs on items like hanging curtains or a skirt that you're currently wearing. They are also portable, which comes in handy when you're away from your home sewing machine. According to Sewing Machines Plus, "handheld sewing machines are able to sew a single-thread chain stitch on many light- to medium-weight fabrics." The chain stitch most handheld sewing machines perform isn't as strong or durable as a repair made on a home sewing machine, so be careful with your work. Some hand sewing machines are cordless, running on batteries, while others are electric.

• Consult the manual for your handheld sewing machine. If you have no manual and fail to obtain one from the customer service department for the manufacturer, proceed with Step
• Insert the appropriate quantity and type of batteries into the battery compartment, or plug in the machine.
• Place the pre-threaded bobbin into the bobbin compartment. You will only have one bobbin as most hand sewing machines only sew with a single thread. Pull about 8 inches of thread out from the right of the bobbin.
• Feed the thread from the bobbin through the eyelet or hook on the needle arm. Sometimes the eyelet or hook is positioned on top of the machine, while other machines feature the eyelet or hook protruding from the outside of the arm.
• Wrap the thread around the tension control apparatus, usually a dial or a spring-loaded wire loop.
• Feed the thread through the eye of needle. Some models require the thread to be loaded through the eye from back to front, others from front to back. If you don't have a manual, you'll need to test it both ways to discover which works best for your particular machine.
• Adjust the thread tension (tightness) by twisting the dial or knob. The lower the number on the dial/knob, the looser the thread tension. If your machine's chain stitch is too loopy or is tightly pulling the fabric, experiment with different tension numbers to find the best one for your sewing task. Different thicknesses and types of fabric affect the tension of the thread.
• Pull 3 inches of thread through the needle. Insert the fabric to be sewn into the machine. There is usually some sort of gripper, plate, or feed guide below the needle arm where you insert the fabric.
• Turn on the power switch and start sewing. When you've reached the end of your seam, remove the fabric, reverse the machine, and sew over the previous seam. Since your machine only sews in a non-interlocking chain stitch, the stitches are not locked and can be pulled right from the fabric. Sewing back over the stitches in the reverse direction locks your stitches and prevents unraveling.
