How to Choose a Quilt Backing

Once you've finished piecing a quilt top, you must find an appropriate backing. Rather than settling for whatever you see first, take your time to make the right choice. If you carefully consider what will work best with your pieced quilt top, your finished quilt will look like a thoughtfully crafted piece.

Choose a quilt backing fabric that's made from the same material as your quilt. For example, back a silk quilt top with silk fabric and back a cotton quilt top with cotton fabric.
Pick a high-quality fabric for your quilt backing. Rather than choosing the cheapest fabric option, pick a fabric that is attractive and will stand up to use. This will ensure your quilt top and quilt backing wear evenly.
Select a high-quality white fabric, such as bleached muslin or quilter's cotton, if you want your quilt to feature a traditional backing.
Choose a solid-colored fabric that picks up one of the more prominent colors on your quilt top if you want a slightly more vibrant quilt backing.
Avoid busy prints with multiple bright colors; they may clash with, or even overwhelm your quilt top. Instead, choose subtle prints that coordinate with a color featured somewhere on the quilt top.
Pick a fabric for your quilt backing that will make your quilt reversible. For example, if you choose a rich solid color that complements the quilt top design, the back of the quilt can look just as good as the front.

Other Thoughts: The birch color quilt looks so beautiful in my bedroom! I absolutely love it!!! It's very good quality. I washed it a few times and it looks like brand new. It doesn't wrinkle. Silk adds a little sheen to the quilt which makes it look rich. And most importantly the quilt is very soft and comfortable.

Other Thoughts: I bought this set for our guest bed, which also happens to be our baby's nursery. The colors and fabric are wonderful and soft. The quilt has a nice weight to it, not too light and not too heavy. I can't really comment on sleeping with it since it's in our guest room, but I imagine it would be very comfortable with a blanket (like a velux blanket) between the top sheet and the quilt. Overall very happy.
