Size in Detail:

A Tutorial for Sleep SackThe SleepSack is a product manufactured by the Halo company. This product allows you to keep your wrap your baby in a warm, zippered type of blanket. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends removing any loose bedding materials that from a baby's sleeping area in order to help prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Using a Halo SleepSack is an effective way to keep your baby warm and secure without using loose blankets that could potentially block the airway
- Lay the sleep sack on a flat surface such as a changing table or bed.
- Position your baby on top of the sleep sack with his head above the top edge and his body centered between the two holes.
- Insert each arm through the arm holes.
- Zip the zipper all the way up.
- Wrap the left side of the swaddling section (the horizontal section of the sleep sack) across the baby's body and fasten it to the Velcro attachment on the right side of the sleep sack. Repeat this with the right side of the swaddling section as well. You can wrap these sections over the baby's arms if you want a full swaddling, or you can wrap them just under the arms to allow for more freedom of movement.
How Old Should a Baby Be for a Sleep Sack?
- Baby sleep sacks are recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics for newborn infants as a substitute for loose bedding and blankets. Sudden infant death studies have found that loose bedding and blankets can be hazardous to newborns and infants. The sleep sack is sleeveless with a zipper and requires one yard of cotton or fleece material. Commercial sleep sacks are sold in newborn, small, medium and large sizes.
- SIDS is Declining
- The American Academy of Pediatrics Task Force on Sudden Infant Death published a study in 2005 noting a 50-percent decline in crib deaths since 1992. The reason given is increased public awareness generated by the 1994 "Back to Sleep" campaign. The recommended sleep position for infants is on their backs.
- Bottom Line
- A sleep sack is recommended because it reduces overheating of the infant while sleeping. More important, it reminds parents to place the infant on its back when sleeping because that's the best position for unobstructed breathing. According to a Philadelphia Business Journal article on April 13, 2010, sleep sacks are in and blankets are out at well baby and neonatal intensive care unit at Chester County Hospital and more than 250 hospitals around the country.

06-17-2011- Other Thoughts: I love this thing! I never have to worry about sleep sack coming off my baby... It's sleeveless which she seems to enjoy and there is plenty of leg room for her to kick away... Highly recommend this product. Oh yeah, the zipper zips down at the feet, away from her precious neck & chin.. A nice touch...

06-01-2011- Other Thoughts: I received my first sleep sack for my daughter at our baby shower (almost 3 years ago). I had never even heard of it. My daughter loved sleeping in it and I felt comfortable that she was snug and warm. I ended up purchasing several more over the following months. Now, I'm pregnant with my second child and will definitely be using these again. I highly recommend the sleep sacks!!

04-21-2011- Other Thoughts: My son is at the age where he wiggles and kicks all the time. This is perfect for keeping him warm at night. The cotton is light weight, but is perfect for him.
