How to Make Bath Soap at Home

If you are looking for a way to save money on your personal care products, making your own bath soap is a great place to start. Not only can you make a bar of soap cheaper than purchasing a bar in the grocery store, but you can personalize the soap to contain the ingredients you want. You can even color the soap to be your favorite color, or scent it with your favorite fragrance.

• Pour 16 oz. of olive oil in a medium pot and heat it over medium heat.
• Pour 6 oz. of water in a small pot while your olive oil is heating up. Then slowly add the 2 oz. of lye. Stir with a plastic spoon to combine.
• Use a food thermometer to keep track of the two temperatures. Combine the two when the olive oil has reached 120 degrees F. and the lye/water has reached 90 degrees F.
• Stir until the solution becomes thick and cloudy looking. When this happens, the ingredients are trace. That means they are ready for any additional ingredients you may want to add.
• Add 1 oz. of your favorite essential oil. This may be lavender essential oil or rosemary essential oil. You can even split the 1 oz. up and do 1/2 oz. of orange essential oil and 1/2 oz. of lemon essential oil.
• Add 1/2 tsp. of your favorite fragrance oil and a few drops of the color soap dye you want your soap to be. Give the ingredients one final stir.
• Pour your homemade bath soap into soap molds, which can be purchased at any craft store. Soap molds come in your basic rectangle, but they also come in shapes such as hearts or seashells.
• Set the molds aside for 72 hours to set. You can then remove the soaps and begin using them.

Tips & Warnings

• Wear rubber gloves to just in case the lye splashes out of the container.
• Never place your lye in the container first and then add the water. Always start with the water and then add the lye. This lessens the chance that the lye will splash back out.
