How to Build a Sumo Robot:

Designing the Robot:

• Decide on a design. There are many options for building a sumo robot, and selecting the right one will make the difference between victory and defeat. The most common design, and easiest for beginners, is a standard wedge shaped robot
• Select parts. Local robotic stores, online retailers, and in sometime hardware stores are a good place to source parts. Ensure that everything is sturdy and can stand up to the rigors of competition. The most important part is the sensor. This is a small computer that will help your robot detect it's surroundings. Some, like the Sharp IR Range Finder are cheap, typically costing between $10 to $20
• Use a program such as 3D CAD (see Resources) to design your robot. Websites such as Society of Robots (see Resources) often have existing templates for the program that you can download for free. You can choose to copy these designs or modify them
• Cut scrap material into suitable shapes. Experts often use a device called a CNC machine which can cut pieces or metal accurately according to the 3D design. Amateurs would do best to use pre-built material sold at hobby stores or online retailers
• Lay out all the pieces of your robot and ensure that you're not missing any pieces
• Assemble your robot according to the design you've chosen

Assembling the Robot:

• Assemble a base for the robot. It should have enough room to accommodate batteries, servos, and other inner workings
• Place the batteries, sensor, servos, and motors inside the base of the robot
• Connect all the necessary components. The batteries must be attached to the motor which should lead to the servos which in turn operate the wheels
• Place a large sheet of metal over top of the robot's base. This should provide a wedge which your robot can use to fight competitors
• Ensure all the pieces are secure. Once the robot is completed, test it out to see if everything works
