How Does a Spinning Top Work:

• At Rest - The spinning top, usually a child's toy, is a fascinating glimpse into the physical laws that govern the universe. Energy, friction, velocity, momentum -- all come into play as the top spins wildly across a table or floor. But before this happens, the top is at rest yet possesses potential, or stored, energy. Until a force is exerted on it, it remains still, waiting for the action to happen. The shape of the top is important. An acorn is the perfect example of a top-shaped object: broad and rounded at the top, narrowing to a point at the bottom. However, until force is exerted upon it, it's just an acorn on the ground
• Kinetic Energy - The top is steadied and rests with its bottom tip touching the floor. Most tops are put into motion by twisting the top stem with a snap and releasing. Other tops are spun by pulling a cord wrapped around their centers. Some tops are released from about hip level with a snap of the wrist and sent spinning to the floor. In any case, the potential energy within the top is released, changing to kinetic energy, the energy of movement and motion. The spinning top rotates around an unseen principal axis. If the top were perfect in every way -- perfectly balanced and weighted -- and the floor was perfectly level as well, the top would rotate pretty much indefinitely. How to Turn a Spinning Top:

Turning a Finger Top:

• Grab hold of the neck of the top between the forefinger and thumb of your dominant hand
• Snap the forefinger and thumb together to start the spin of the top
• Drop the top onto a flat surface and watch it spin

Turning a Peg Top:

• Create a loop on one end of the string large enough to fit your finger
• Tie a knot on the other end of the string
• Hold the knot on the neck of the top in place using your finger and begin to wrap the string around the neck so it holds the knot in place
• Wrap the length of the string around the neck tightly
• Hold the top at chest height and throw the top out in front of you at an even height. As you throw the top, the string will set the spinning top in motion
