What are LED Lights?
- LED stands for "light-emitting diode." LED lights are extremely small semiconductor diodes that are capable of creating light. The light that is created by any given LED can be of any color and can even be ultraviolet or infrared. The light that is created by an LED light depends on the material that is used to make the semiconductor and the current that is run though it. There are many different types of LEDs, including miniature ones, as well as high-powered LEDs and multicolor variations.
How Do LED Lights Work?
- LED lights work very similarly to standard light bulbs except for the fact that LEDs are much smaller and contain no filament.
- Instead of a filament, an LED creates light using nothing but the movement of electricity along the path of its semiconductor.
- As the electrons stream across the semiconductor, they create electromagnetic radiation. Some forms of this electromagnetic radiation can take the form of visible light, which humans can perceive via sight.
What Are LED Lights Used For?
- There is an almost inexhaustible supply of applications for LED lights, some of which have already been realized and others that are currently being implemented.
- Within the world of electronics LED lights are used in traffic lights, screen displays, computers, brake lights and any other application which requires a bright, inexpensive and long-lasting light.
- They also are used in the burgeoning field of photonic textiles and as a source of light in places where high temperatures cannot be tolerated. Indeed, LED lights are one of the most important technologies in contemporary electronic products and many such products would be impossible without them.
How to Change Spotlight Bulbs:
- Turn the power off to the light socket. If the bulb is intact and simply burnt out then turning the light switch off is sufficient. If the bulb has broken then you will want to unplug the fixture or switch the power off at the circuit breaker
- Let the bulb and fixture cool. Spotlights generate an intense amount of heat. Before working with the fixture, give it at least ten minutes after shutting off to cool
- Remove the old bulb. If the bulb is still intact simply turn it counterclockwise by hand until it comes free from the fixture. If the bulb is recessed than you can use a small plunger to grip the bulb and turn it. If the spotlight bulb is cracked or broken you will need to use a pair of rubber-coated pliers. Reach the pliers down to the base of the light bulb and slowly turn the broken bulb counterclockwise until it comes free
- Wrap the old spotlight bulb in old newspaper and discard it in the trash

02-08-2011- Other Thoughts: They look great - They look like very expensive bulbs when in eyeball cans. You may want to gradually turn dimmer up if a surge is what you think broke the bulb - we haven't had any break.

12-22-2010- Other Thoughts: I've been watching LED lighting for quite a few years not and anxiously awaiting a good viable product that is affordable. This lamp simply works and does dim nicely.

08-26-2010- Other Thoughts: Puts out more lumens than the 5 watt bulb it replaced in a recessed can. The led replacement bulb is more concentrated, like a spot bulb, so not the best choice if you need a broader illuminated area.

10-20-2010- Other Thoughts: Our first LEDs. The color is very good, very bright, definitely comparable to an incandescent.. Yes, we wish they cost less, but we're hoping to cut energy costs as well as replacement costs over the long haul.

12-09-2010- Other Thoughts: LED lights are still expensive, but the energy/cost savings is great and their service life is long. This Led bulb light seems to put out lumens equivalent to an incandescent or even a fluorescent light.
