How to Choose Safe Plastic Food Storage Containers:

Find Old BPA Plastic
- Go through the cupboards of your house, searching for plastic containers. Check water bottles and baby cups and bottles too. Look on the bottom. Look for the little recycling triangle symbol. In the center of it, there will be a number. Numbers 1-5 are fine. These are BPA free plastics
- Put any containers with a 6 or 7 in the triangle aside. Throw these away. They have BPA in them
Shop BPA Free
- Look on the internet or go to a kitchenware store to find high quality plastic food storage. Look on the bottom of the plastic ware to make sure the triangle has a 1-5 in it. Read labels, so you're aware of care instructions. Make sure that it is microwave, freezer, and dishwasher safe
Freshness Seals
- There are some really nice containers that have silicone around the lid, so the seal is really air tight. Look for this in order to have your food last longer in the refrigerator or freezer
Shape Matters
- Buy only rectangular containers. This shape will sit right up next to another one without wasting any space. Round containers packed next to each other create all kinds of wasted space
- Also, buy ones that can be stored with the lid on, and that nest inside each other when not in use. Buying one or two big sets all at once is a smart way to go. This will give you a ton of cupboard space, and it makes lids and bottoms a breeze to find
Nano Silver
- In order to keep your foods as fresh as possible for as long as possible, look for plastics with new nano silver technology. These plastics have tiny silver particles in them, and are supposed to help retard food spoilage
How to Clean Plastic Containers:
- Clean the plastic containers in hot, soapy water, using a nylon scrubber. Rinse well. Never use metal scrubbers on the containers, as they can damage the plastic
- Remove the stains by trying one of several methods. Try covering the stain with a liquid automatic dish washing detergent (one plastic company recommends Palmolive) and allow it to stand for about 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly
- Soak the container in a solution of 1 tablespoon of liquid chlorine bleach to 1 cup of warm water. Allow it to sit for thirty minutes. Rinse until you can no longer smell the bleach in the container
- Remove exterior stains. Try using Bar Keepers Friend (or Cameo or Dawn Power Dissolver) and a nylon scrubber to remove stains. Rinse thoroughly
- Try an oven cleaner for exterior stains. Make sure there is adequate ventilation. Wear gloves and pour the oven cleaner on the stain. Allow it to sit for the time recommended on the can. While still wearing gloves, use a cleaning cloth or sponge to remove the oven cleaner. Do not reuse this cleaning cloth until it has been laundered. Do not reuse the sponge at all. Discard it. Rinse the plastic container thoroughly under hot running water and wash with liquid dish washing detergent with a fresh sponge or cloth

03-25-2011- Other Thoughts: These are fantastic! I am using several of these for my pantry, but they also have a small removable "grate" included, that is lifted so you could put refrigerated items that need "airflow". Just a great all around storage solution.

03-05-2011- Other Thoughts: Nice size for getting your favorite salad mix ready for the week. It's big enough to hold a large head of cabbage just to give you an idea of the size. It took me a bit to get used to the way the lid locks. It's unlike any other storage container I have in that respect. I haven't had it for that long so I can't comment on durability.

02-24-2011- Other Thoughts: I bought this item shortly after buying a bread maker machine. I was looking for something that would allow me to store my loaves of homemade bread preventing them from prematurely getting stale. This container was perfect for it!

02-05-2011- Other Thoughts: My apartment has an ongoing problem with pantry moths, so I bought this to store cat food in. No surprises - great Lock & Lock quality, tight seal.
