How to Use an LED as a Streetlight:
LEDs are paving the way for the future of street light design and usage across the globe. The LED-powered lights are lighter, brighter, cleaner and require less maintenance, making them one of the best lighting options for street use.- Calculate the effective lighting area of purposed LED street lights since the brighter lights are more likely to cover a greater area. On the basis of this effective area, calculate the number of LEDs required to light the target region, instead of simply replacing old streetlights with LEDs at a 1-to-1 ratio.
- Consider wind-load of the LED lights, since though the LEDs represent a technological advance from bulb lights, they still must be suited to their environment. Well-designed LED street lights come in casings that can withstand winds well in excess of 150 MPH.
- Use modular or segmented LEDs lights in urban areas since modular lights allow easy switch-out of older LED technologies for newer ones as the technology evolves, making the light even more cost effective over time.
- Check out solar powered LEDs used by countries with high levels of yearly sunlight. Even if you decide against the solar powered versions of the LED light, you should still take the environmental and energy savings into account when trying to expand LED street light coverage in a particular area.
How Street Lights Work:
Sodium Lights- Most street lights are sodium lamps. Sodium lamps produce an orange glow which is not very attractive, but they are extremely efficient. Electricity runs through a tube filled with sodium and a bit of argon gas. When the light first turns on, the sodium is solid, but as it heats up it evaporates into the tube. When an electron hits a molecule of sodium, the sodium absorbs some of the energy. The molecule then releases the energy as a photon of orange light.
Timers
- Timers are used to control many street lamp systems. Usually, an electronic clock is built into the entire system. The clock turns the street lights on in the evening and off in the morning automatically. In some systems, the timer will vary slightly day by day, keeping the lights on for longer periods in the winter months and shorter ones in the summer.
Photodetectors
- Some street lights use a different system to turn the lights on at night and off during the day. These lamps use photodetectors, small electric components which are sensitive to light. One of most common type of photodetector is a photoresistor. Photoresistors resist the flow of electricity, but their resistance drops when light hits them. The more resistance in a circuit, the less electric current flows through. In a photoresistor powered street light, a small current runs through the resistor. When it becomes dark, the resistance increases and the current drops. This tells the circuit to switch the light on until daylight comes and the current increases again. Like timers, these systems adjust their timing during darker months of the year. Unlike timers, they can also detect dark, overcast weather and switch on the lights to help compensate.

01-05-2011- Other Thoughts: Best thing about this light is that it is adjustable! Worst thing is that it seems to drift downward a bit. I've tightened the screw but it is still drifting. (I think a bit of cork will fix it. It needs a tubular lamp, but you can get that at Home Depot. It throws nice light on your stand and did I mention that it is adjustable! Very nice for the price.

12-15-2010- Other Thoughts: Just as described by others.

Works right out of the box after 1 charge period - but not that bright. Usually shines through most of the night, but is always out when I wake the next morning. When it is on it puts out enough light to see things if you stop and look, but is not bright enough to really light the area around it. (more like mood or ambiance lighting). A lot cheaper than others that put out the same light though!

11-23-2010- Other Thoughts: Overall this is a good product. I used it to replace an electric post light that did not work due to underground wiring issues. It gives off adequate light, just don't expect it to light up the entire front yard. If you get a full day of sunlight, the light will stay lit all night, even in the winter. On cloudy days, you will only get 3 to 4 hours of light. Thanks to the other reviewer who noted that these were available at Menards, I ending up buying from there for $70. The only improvement I recommend is better fastners to mount the light to the post - the 3 tiny set screws included are pathetic. I drilled holes in the post and secured it with sheetmetal screws.

11-16-2010- Other Thoughts: The small set screws used to secure to the post barely had enough space to tighten so I drilled out and tapped 3 holes in the post and it is now very secure. One of the heads of the two screws holding the lid on was loose from the shaft. (Hence 4 and not 5 stars.) Not sure why Home Depot and Lowes do not carry solar post lamps. (They all have solar landscape lights.) Menards had three models to choose from in the "Enchanted Garden" brand. I would urge you to consider going solar! My neighbor will likely get one. He has his gas turned of to save $$, There should be a tax credit for this device!

02-08-2011- Other Thoughts: The LED is bright and allows her to direct the light to exactly where she needs it so that the light doesn't blind me while watching tv or even talking to her (the old one lit the room and tv like a runway). She liked it so much she just bought another one to give to her aging dad for use while he does his crossword and game books. It will work terrific for him doing this.
