How to Install LED Lighting?
LED lighting is a newer way to provide light to various places, such as under a kitchen cabinet. This type of light is typically more energy efficient than a standard incandescent light. Depending on how your cabinets are built the lights are designed to have a low profile so they cannot be seen under the cabinet. Installing LED lights can be done by first deciding where to place the LED light assembly.
Instructions:
- Mark the placement for the LED lights so that so you know where the electrical wiring needs to be located
- Find a place for the electrical source for the LED lights. The electrical source is typically located within a kitchen cabinet
- Drill small pilot holes in the underside of the cabinet to see where the wiring will need to go
- Locate a circuit to use for the LED lighting on your home's junction or circuit box
- Turn off the circuit that is going to be used for the LED lighting
- Feed the electrical wire from your basement junction or circuit box, through the floor, up to the cabinet
- Connect the electrical wire from the lighting source to the LED lighting. Refer to the LED lighting instructions to properly connect the electrical wiring
- Connect the ground wires from the electrical source for the LED lights to the switch box
- Turn on the circuit from the junction box and test the lighting by turning the light switch to the "on" position
How to Hang LED Lights?
If you love party or Christmas lights, LED lights may be just the thing for you. They come in all sizes, colors and shapes; they illuminate brightly while using much less energy than old-fashioned twinkle or Christmas bulb lights; most are impervious to weather; and they are cool to the touch - making them a safer alternative to traditional lights. In addition, you can purchase LEDs in strands or singles, and rig them together in creative ways. Most are battery operated, saving the hassle and danger of stringing extension cords to electrical outletsInstructions:
- Measure the space where you will hang the LED lights
- Determine whether LED light strands will run straight across, dip for a swag effect or wind around - as on a tree or post
- Use the exact total measurement plus a few inches to determine the number of strands you need for straight runs
- Multiply the number of inches straight across the area to be lit by 1 1/2 to 3 times to form swags. The greater the multiplier, the more depth you will have in the swag
- Calculate the maximum circumference of trees or posts by multiplying the diameter of the structure by 3.14. Use that number multiplied by the number of times you want to wrap the lights around, to figure the total length - or number of light strands - you need. Add a few feet for good measure
- Measure the distance from an electrical source for plug-in lights, and add that distance to the total number of inches needed. Omit this step for battery-powered LED strands
- Use heavy staples over the strands -- being very careful to avoid penetrating the wires -- for a quick, secure mount to wooden surfaces. Alternatively, screw cup-hooks to wood, and lay strands across those, using twist-ties to hold the wire securely at each junction to eliminate sags and prevent wires coming unfastened
- Attach wires to smooth metal or glass surfaces with suction-mounted hooks
- Wrap strands without fasteners around posts or trees starting around the bottom and wrapping tightly. Use occasional zip ties, string or wire around tree or post if necessary to secure the strands, especially where more than one strand connects, and at branches from the main trunk of trees. Use plastic "tree clips" to fasten lights at ends of small branches for a floating effect
- Hang lights from structures with a lip, such as a gutter, using small "S" hooks or specially designed "gutter hooks"
- Use picture hangers or clear, plastic adhesive-backed clips on indoor walls, door frames or cabinets to fasten strands securely with little or no damage to surfaces
- Employ special "shingle clips" of metal or plastic to fasten lights on roofs
