How to Find the Right Size Frame for Glasses
Frame sizes vary widely in eyeglasses, and the right fit and frame can be difficult to find, especially if you are ordering a pair of glasses online. There are three important measurements placed on the inside of eyeglass frames, for example 49-20-139. The first number (49) represents the size of the lenses, the second number (20) is the bridge size and the third number (139) is the temple length, which is where the arms bend to hook over the ears. Unfortunately, there are no standard sizes, and each frame will vary- Go shopping. Find an optical store, and try on a variety of frames. When you find a flattering pair, look inside for the three measurements, and write them down. Adjustments are usually made after eyeglasses are purchased, so don't be too concerned if the fit isn't perfect. Find a few more pairs that fit well, and write down those measurements
- Use these ranges of measurements as a guide when searching for new frames. If you already have a pair of glasses, write down those measurements, and use those numbers as a guide.
- Find the average for all of your measurements, or use measurements from an existing pair of eyeglasses
- Look for a lens diameter within 2 mm of your measurement. If the measurement is 49 mm, search for frames having a lens diameter between 47 mm and 51 mm
- Search for a bridge number within 1 mm of your bridge measurement. If your measurement is 20 mm, you should look for frames having a bridge measurement between 19 mm and 21 mm
- Find a temple width measurement within 5 mm of your measurement. If your measurements is 139, look for frames with a temple width measurement between 134 mm and 144 mm
- Order your glasses within those suggested measurements. When your eyeglasses are finished, have them adjusted in an optical store to achieve the best possible fit
