Knitting Instructions for a Woman's Sweater:

Knitting a sweater is a milestone in any knitter's repertoire. This woman's sweater pattern is worked in the round from the top down to create a custom fit raglan-style sweater using worsted weight wool. The finished sweater has a roughly 38-inch chest and is worked on a size 8 needle at a gauge of 22 stitches and 24 rows per 4 inches. This pattern uses a basic raglan pattern worked from a raglan pattern generator and assumes basic knitting knowledge
Creating your Woman's Raglan Sweater- Cast on 92 stitches with your size 6 circular needle
- Place a marker at your first stitch and join to work in the round, being careful that your stitches are not twisted around the needle
- Work around the needle in a purl 2 stitches, knit 2 stitches pattern, ending round at stitch marker
- Continue this pattern until your piece measures 1 inch from the cast on edge. End round at stitch marker
- Change to size 8 needles
- Knit 14 stitches and place stitch marker (sleeve), knit 32 stitches and place marker (sweater back), knit 14 stitches and place marker (sleeve), knit 32 stitches and place marker (sweater front). End round at stitch marker
- Knit around, increasing one stitch by knitting into the front and back on each side of each stitch marker. For each increase round, you will add eight stitches
- Knit around to the stitch marker
- Repeat Steps 7 and 8 until you have 116 stitches on the back and front sections of your sweater, and 97 stitches for each sleeve. End round at stitch marker
- Knit around, placing the 97 sleeve stitches for each sleeve on waste yarn or a stitch holder as you come to them. After this is done, you should be back at the beginning of the round, with both sleeves on waste yarn or a stitch holder. End round at stitch marker
- Knit around, working the front and back of the sweater but not the sleeves (which have been moved to waste yarn). End round at stitch marker
- Continue knitting each round until the torso of the sweater measures 13.8 inches from the armpits (the point where the arms were added to waste yarn). Use your measuring tape to get an accurate measurement
- Change to the size 6 circular needle at the start of the next round and work in a purl 2, knit 2 stitch pattern. Continue working this pattern until the purl 2, knit 2 stitch pattern measures 2 inches in length. End round at stitch marker
- Bind off your sweater body. Cut yarn, and weave in ends using a yarn needle
Adding Sleeves
- Pick up 97 sleeve stitches from the waste yarn using size 8 double pointed needles and starting at the bottom of the armhole. Place marker to indicate the beginning of the round
- Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist your stitches around the needle
- Work knit stitch around for four rows. On the next round, decrease one stitch by knitting two stitches together on each side of the stitch marker. End rounds at stitch marker
- Work the preceding rows until 42 stitches remain on the needles and the sleeve measures 19 inches. End round at stitch marker
- Switch to size 6 double pointed needles
- Knit in a purl 2, knit 2 pattern. Continue working in this pattern until the purl 2, knit 2 edge reaches 2 inches in length. End at stitch marker
- Bind off sleeve. Cut yarn, and use a yarn needle to weave in ends
- Repeat Steps 1 to 6 for second sleeve
The Best Cashmere Sweaters for Women:

Cashmere sweaters are a coveted item in any woman's closet. Buying quality cashmere has become quite confusing in recent years with cashmere sweaters available at bargain prices. Knowing what makes a cashmere sweater exceptional will help when comparison shopping and may leave you with an expensive cashmere sweater at a terrific price
The Touch Test- It may sound simplistic, but your fingers are a sound judge of fine cashmere. Good quality cashmere will be soft to the touch. Longer fibers are used in the weaving process to produce fine quality cashmere. If shorter fibers are used, the feel will be coarser and pilling will appear with frequent rubbing motions. Good cashmere should feel luxurious
The Color Test
- Dyeing harms the cashmere fibers. When damage occurs, the fibers appear rougher and feel coarse. Cashmere sweaters that are light in color have used less dye. Choosing white, gray or light pastel colored cashmere lessens the chance that fibers have been damaged with dye and the sweater will retain the original luxurious cashmere threads
The Stretch Test
- Cashmere does have a lightweight feel but it should still feel substantial, rather than paper thin. To test the density of the fibers used, pull at the sides of the sweater and then let go. A good quality cashmere will retain its shape. A sweater poor in quality will stretch out easily and appear out of shape
How to Wash:
Wool is a miraculous fiber in that it can carry a large amount of moisture without changing the integrity of the insulation properties. Wool was often used by those who lived in cold, damp climates or those who worked out at sea. Now, wool is still utilized for its warming properties as well as its style. However, wool is notoriously difficult to both keep clean and keep from shrinking. Dry cleaning is best for your wool items, but there are also methods you can employ at home as well as long as you have a front-loading washing machine•l Always check the wash care label and realize that when you wash your wool coat yourself, you are taking a bit of a risk. Wool is often mixed with other fibers such as lycra or cotton. In this case, you should still treat and wash your item as if it were pure wool
•l Test color fastness on your coat by pressing a damp cotton ball to the fabric. If any color is transferred, plan to wash the item by itself
•l Avoid shrinking and felting by washing your coat in the wool-washing program on your washer. If your machine does not have such a program, improvise by choosing a washer setting with a warm temperature and a high water level so the coat is allowed more suspension and less pull
•l Choose a mechanical setting on your washer that is medium drum action with frequent rests to allow any fibers that tighten to relax
•l Do not use regular laundry detergent for your wool coat. Choose a brand that is specifically meant for wool washing, such as Woolite. You can find one in the laundry section of your local store
•l Remove your item when it is through washing and lay it flat on a towel or other absorbent cloth to dry. Some reshaping may be necessary when laying it out. Keep in mind that the garment will maintain whatever shape it dries in, so make sure it is wrinkle free when laid out. Allow it to dry thoroughly before wearing it
