Shirts That Light Up to Music
T-shirts that light up as they react to a musical beat first arrived on the scene in the 1990s. The shirts flash in various patterns as the musical beat changes, making the wearer feel somewhat part of the music. They will be visible in dark conditions, such as a nightclub, and can make for a conversation starter among your friends.
How They Work

The shirts utilize electroluminescent (EL) technology, which allows for small electrical pulses to be sent to the display pad (light-up area). The EL pad, which is approximately 4 millimeters thick, is incorporated into the shirt, and is connected to a small battery pack hidden inside a special pocket near the shirt's hemline. The battery pack allows the display area of the shirt to be illuminated, whenever a musical beat is identified by the shirt's built-in microphone. As the beat changes, so will the pre-programmed pattern on the T-shirt.

The most famous brand of shirts that light up is T-Qualizer; representing the first ever illuminated shirt available on the market, according to their website. As well as selling a huge range of different patterned shirts, in 2010, T-Qualizer developed a range of WiFi Detector T-shirts, which recognize and display the strength of any nearby wireless Internet connection. As the wireless signal gets stronger, the lights displayed on the T-shirt actually become brighter.
Customize

Customize your own light-up shirt, by changing the display image on the front panel. While the EL technology and microphone will pick up the beat, you can choose the image that you want lit up. Write your own message on the shirt, which will be fully displayed when the musical beat reaches a certain level of sound. If wearing the shirt to a concert, the name of the performer could be shown in full as the sound level goes up.
Maintenance

Most light-up shirts will last for a few years, given that the display panel on the front of most garments will have a life expectancy of approximately 1000 hours. The shirts need to be cleaned by hand, as placing them in the washing machine will damage the EL technology inside. Detach the battery pack from your shirt, but leave the wire inside. Next, use detergent and water to wash the part of the shirt not touching the display. Gently wipe the display with a damp cloth, before leaving the shirt to dry naturally. If you are not using the shirt for long periods, disconnect the battery pack to help prolong its life.

07-20-2011- Other Thoughts: I wore this shirt at my band's gig last night and this shirt was nothing short of absolutely fantastic. No question it is an attention grabber. Worked great! The display was nice and bright and the sensitivity controls was easy to recalibrate with the room loudness level so that the shirt would display the equalizer bars going up and down with the music no matter how loud or soft the music.

06-23-2011- Other Thoughts: This shirt is the best among many other shirts like this made by other companies. This shirt has lasted 6 hours, and still VERY bright. It uses 4 AAA batteries. Something i found very cool was that i could plug it into an outlet so that i could use it at home. This is EXTREMELY bright. Its a lot brighter than others Ive seen worn at raves. It lights up my room in the dark. Got a LOT of complements. The shirt feels wierd to wear the first time you put it one, but you get used to it fast. Very fun and cool to watch. Its just that awesome!!!

06-09-2011- Other Thoughts: The T-equalizer shirt is unique and a lot of fun. I know that these shirts got their start in the "rave" world, but I got one for my 15-year old son at his request for Christmas, and he's had a lot of fun wearing it to school. He's in the band and the pep band and it's been fun for him and other kids and teachers to see the bars in action when talking, laughing or practicing their music. I have to say the shirt got even more positive comments from teachers than students.

05-12-2011- Other Thoughts: As a DJ I see a lot of these in the clubs, but the T-Qualizer is the best graphic equalizer t-shirt out there. This is a sensitive electronic device, so handle it with care. Don't let the battery pack dangle by the cable, and disconnect the cable before washing carefully by hand and drying flat on a towel. This EL T-Shirt is amazing.
