How to Calibrate a TDS Meter:

Oppon Health Care Digital Filter Water TDS Meter Tester

TDS stands for total dissolved solids. A TDS meter is a probe that consists of two metal probes that are inserted into water or hydroponic solutions to measure the amount of salt and minerals that are in the liquid. A TDS meter must be calibrated regularly to continue giving an accurate reading. If the meter is used every day, it should be calibrated once a week. If it is used less often, it should be calibrated once every two to three weeks. As battery life decreases, the meter loses calibration

    • 1. Rinse the probes of a TDS meter in clean water. Shake the water off of the meter and turn it on
    • 2. Place the probes of the TDS meter into the liquid calibration solution up to a point between the "min" and "max" lines
    • 3. Compare the reading of the meter with the reading on the bottle. If the two readings are not the same, insert a mini screwdriver into the back of the meter. The hole that you stick the screwdriver into is known as a trimmer pot
    • 4. Turn the screwdriver clockwise to increase the reading of the TDS meter, or counterclockwise to decrease the reading. Adjust the meter until it matches the specifications of the calibration liquid

How to Troubleshoot a TDS Tester:

    TDS Meter Tester

The amount of mineral deposits in your water depends on the area you live in. Some regions have soft water with little minerals, and other areas have hard water with significant mineral deposits. A TDS tester is an electronic device that measures dissolved solid minerals by detecting the amount of charged ions in the water. High amounts of charged ions indicate the presence of significant dissolved solids. Even though this device may sound complicated, it only requires a simple troubleshooting routine get it back to full operation

    • 1. Attempt to use the TDS tester again if you receive no reading (all tap water has some dissolved solids and produces an ionic charge). Dip the TDS tester probe into a cup or bowl of water and stir the water quickly. The fast movement of water charges the ions, which, in turn, makes it easier for the TDS tester to detect ions. A malfunction may occur if you improperly stir the water
    • 2. Dip the probe in deionized water if problems continue. A small buildup of minerals can form on the probe if it's not properly washed after its last use. Wipe the probe with soft tissue and try to test your water again
    • 3. Make a small detergent solution with deionized water to clean off the probe if you cannot remove the mineral deposits with deionized water alone. A small amount of detergent is enough to dissolve the minerals
    • 4. Inspect the probe for fingerprints and other oils. Oils prevent proper ion detection and do not wash away immediately with deionized water and detergent. Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol to soft tissue and wipe off the probe until you remove all signs of oil marks. Rubbing alcohol also removes oxidation

    How to Test Water Purity:

    Digital TDS

The average person uses 72.5 gallons of water a day. But is that water safe? Water testing is expensive, so make sure you know what to test for and when to do it

    • 1. Request a Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) from your water district. Municipalities are now required to send these to homeowners yearly. This report will tell you about the water that is coming to your house
    • 2. Run some tap water into a clear glass and look closely at it in good lighting. Is it clear or discolored? Do you see sediment in the water? Smell the water; expect a faint smell of chlorine (like a swimming pool) if you are on a city water supply, but any other smell - particularly that of rotten eggs - indicates that your water should be tested. Check drains, fixtures and porcelain items such as toilets and tubs for red, green, blue or brown staining
    • 3. Ask the local health department or Cooperative Extension Service (part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture) for the name of a reputable local water-quality testing facility. If you live in a municipality, your water will be of a consistent quality; you won't need to have it tested every year
    • 4. Alternatively, buy a home water test from a hardware store. While less accurate than a lab test, it's a less expensive alternative
    • 5. Be especially conscious of your water quality if you have a private water supply, such as a well. You alone are responsible for your water. Test well water for herbicides and insecticides when you first move in, and then at least twice that first year (early spring and late fall) for coliforms (bacteria) and nitrates, and once a year for lead, pH and total dissolved solids (TDS). If you do any work on your well, notice chemical use on or near your property, or see any of the above-mentioned indicators, have your water checked
    • 6. Have the water tested when you move into a new home so that you will have a baseline guide for future water testing. Check for coliforms, calcium, copper, iron, lead, magnesium, nitrates, pH, sodium, sulfate, zinc and TDS

great

I tested my water from the tap, refrigerator, and bottled water purified that I had. Water TDS Meter Tester works great. I've tested water in other people's homes and at church. The meter seems to read very accurately in that none of the readings are the same and the places that I knew had bad water were reflected by the meter reading. Easy to use and read. I highly recommend it.

good

I use this everywhere I need to do a quick check of water I drink, at work, at my son's school, at home, different bottled water, different water sources. I measure everything with this Digital TDS Meter Tester and gives me a good benchmark by which to make smarter choices with the water I drink. I had a reverse osmosis filtration system at home and the reading rocks.

I saw some negative reviews of non-contact voltage testers of varying brands, so I was worried. So far, I haven't had a problem with this TDS Meter Tester.
