- Decide on the type of tie tack wanted. Think about matching it to the metal colors of other jewelry items like cuff links, rings or watches. For a modern, eclectic look, think about mixing various metals like gold, silver and copper together
- Purchase a tie tack if there isn't already one in the accessory arsenal. Tie tacks can be purchased almost anywhere that jewelry is sold. This includes jewelry stores, major department stores like Macy's or Dillards, discount department stores such as K-Mart or Target, and certain specialty shops
- Determine how the tie tack will be worn. This will depend on the type of tie tack chosen. Some are composed of nothing but a pin with a safety back. The tack pin goes through the tie and is secured by putting the back piece into place. Other tie tacks also include a short chain that ends in a straight bar. This tie tack style allows the man to place the tack pin into the tie itself and the bar through a shirt buttonhole, thereby holding the tie and shirt together
- Choose the tie to be worn. Make certain that placing the tack through it won't damage the fabric
- Prepare the tie for the tie tack by tying it into place as desired. Make sure that both of the tie's tails are equal in length or that the underneath tail is shorter
- Remove the locking mechanism from the back of the tie tack. How this is accomplished will vary slightly depending upon the type of tie tack chosen. Some backs screw on and off, while others have tiny levers that must be pinched together in order to release the tack back. The levers click back into place once the back mechanism has been put back over the pin and pushed tightly
- Place the tie tack through the tie. It should be placed within the top two-thirds of the tie and near a buttonhole if a chain tack is being used. Once the tack is in the location desired, re-apply the safety back. Be sure that the tie tack's safety back mechanism is on straight and tightly closed, so that the tack will not fall out
- Manipulate the chain bar mechanism at the end of the tie tack through the shirt button to secure the tie and shirt together. Make sure the shirt button is secure and will not pop free

12-24-2010- Other Thoughts: This tie clip is plain silver, and it functions well. I am a medical student, so I needed a professional-looking way to get my tie out of the way when I am examining patients, dealing with body fluids, etc. It matches with any tie, fits better across skinnier ties (but still works with wider ties), and seems to hold its shine well. Seems to be pretty sturdy and the clamp has small teeth to hold it in place. I'm very pleased with it and wear it every day.
