- Consider thickness. The term for layers is ply. Most facial tissue is two-ply. A three-ply facial tissue provides you with greater absorbency. When your cold is at its worst, ply is particularly important
- Evaluate softness. Facial tissue with lotion relieves rough skin associated with nose blowing. Effective lotions include mineral oil, aloe vera and vitamin E
- Check for scent. Odorless facial tissue is ideal if you have allergies. For the non-allergic, perfumes provide a pleasing aroma. Some facial tissue contains eucalyptus, camphor and menthol to produce an odor that will soothe and clear your congested nasal passages
- Look for antiviral properties. When moisture reaches the middle layer of a facial tissue with antiviral properties, it releases ingredients that will kill your cold and flu viruses
- Assess tissue size. Standard facial tissue is 8.6 inches by 8.3 inches. Extra large facial tissue is 1.5 times the standard. The larger size is excellent if your cold is peaking. Purse-sized packages contain standard-sized facial tissue folded into smaller rectangles
