What is a wrench?

- A set of chrome-vanadium metric wrenches, open at one end, box/ring at the other. This type is commonly known as a "combination" wrench
A wrench or spanner is a tool used to provide grip and mechanical advantage in applying torque to turn objects-usually rotary fasteners, such as nuts and bolts-or keep them from turning
- In British English, spanner is the standard term. The most common shapes are called open-ended spanner and ring spanner. The term wrench refers to a type of adjustable spanner
- In American English, wrench is the standard term. The most common shapes are called open-end wrench and box-end wrench. In American English, spanner refers to a specialized wrench with a series of pins or tabs around the circumference. (These pins or tabs fit into the holes or notches cut into the object to be turned.) In American commerce, such a wrench may be called a spanner wrench to distinguish it from the British sense of spanner
- Higher quality wrenches are typically made from chromium-vanadium alloy tool steels and are often drop-forged. They are frequently chrome-plated to resist corrosion and ease cleaning
- Hinged tools, such as pliers or tongs, are not generally considered wrenches
How to Choose the Right Wrench?
- Use these types of wrenches for plumbing projects: Pipe wrenches are ideal for gripping and turning threaded pipe. A spud wrench is designed to tighten or loosen fittings on sink traps and toilet connectors. Strap and chain wrenches fit larger pipes and odd-shaped objects. A monkey wrench looks much like a pipe wrench but is designed for flat surface work, such as square-head bolts
- Put an adjustable wrench ' also known as a Crescent wrench ' to use turning nuts and bolts and small fittings
- Get a multi-wrench for general household use. This tool fits many different sizes of nuts and bolts and eliminates the need to have a whole set of box- or open-end wrenches on hand
- Make use of a combination open- and box-end wrench. The open-end type is useful when you can only access a nut or bolt from one direction. The box-end type has a closer fit than the open-end type and allows for more torque. All of these wrenches come in standard or metric sizes. You must use the correct size for the job or risk stripping the bolt head or nut ' or smashing your knuckles
- Try a ratchet wrench and sockets for faster work with less effort
- Tighten all of the fasteners to the same degree with a torque wrench and sockets to prevent warping. This wrench has a built-in spring-loaded indicator that shows how much torque is being applied

11-24-2010- Other Thoughts: i believe 10-80 ft/lbs range is ideal for the weekend shade-tree auto mechanic. i used this wrench for suspension, brakes and minor engine work. overall very pleased, has a solid feel to it. not the best torque wrench i've seen so far but much better than that auto store loaner tools. i expect to use it for a long time. keep in mind that torque wrenches are not meant to be dropped, used as hammers or breaker bars.

02-24-2011- Other Thoughts: First one I received was completely broken, adjustment sleeve at the bottom of the handle spun freely and a slight grinding noise could be heard inside the wrench. No worries, got it replaced easily in a couple of days.

01-27-2011- Other Thoughts: This torque wrench is reasonably well made and a good value for the price. I have used it three times since receiving and it works fine. The storage case is sturdy and a nice feature to protect the tool when not in use. The operating instructions are easy to understand.
