How to Make a Model Plane:

Plastic model plane kits can produce realistic scale models of aircraft, but the project takes a lot of patience. Waiting long enough for glue and paint to dry is an essential practice and one that is especially difficult for young model builders. A few basic steps can help enthusiasts of all ages build a great model plane- Choose a model plane kit from an Internet source or a local hobby department. Most model airplanes are military aircraft, but a wide choice of civil and commercial aircraft is also available
- Read the instructions and familiarize yourself with all the parts and assembly steps. Cut parts off the casting trees with a fine hobby knife. Use 200- or 400-grit sandpaper to smooth out casting marks
- Wash all parts in mild detergent before painting to remove grease and fingerprints. Paint all small parts before assembly, including the cockpit interior, wheel well and engine interiors. Apply decals to interior parts after painting and before assembly
- Paint larger parts of the model plane before assembly using masking fluid or tape to protect parts to be glued. Let paint dry completely (preferably overnight) before handling or gluing. Use a slim hobby knife and sandpaper to remove paint or chrome from areas to be glued
- Follow the assembly instructions, letting all glue dry thoroughly before continuing to the next assembly step. Mask or remove clear parts such as canopies and lights, and apply a light coat of clear gloss lacquer to the assembled model to make a smooth surface for exterior decals
- Cut individual decals and them soak in water for about 15 to 20 seconds. Use tweezers to position each decal over its mounting location, and use a fine brush to place the decal. Lightly blot excess water with a tissue, and brush on a light coating of decal-softening solution to help it soften and adhere
- Paint weathering details if desired with a fine brush or fine spray. Apply a final coat of flat or gloss lacquer. Modern aircraft are usually finished in gloss coat, while historical planes are more commonly finished in flat lacquer
How to Paint Model Planes:

Model planes are tremendous fun to build and look great on display. The only problem is that model planes don't come with the paint you need, nor are they supplied pre-painted. That means it's your job to paint them! But fear not. Painting model planes is as fun as building them, if not even more rewarding since you can paint them however you want. With time and practice, your model planes will look like they were painted by a pro- Tape any transparent parts of the plane, like the canopy or the wells for the landing lights. This will keep them safe from being accidentally painted over. Plain painter's tape will work, but be sure to cut it so that it fits precisely over the transparent parts (use a fine-tip marker to trace the edges so you can cut it)
- Prime your model using a spray primer. To prime the model hold it about 12 inches from the spray can and spray it with short, steady bursts. Do this across the entire model, but be sure not to spray too much on one spot or you can end up clogging the detailing
- Apply your base coat. The base coat serves as the primary, non-highlighted color that the model is supposed to represent. In the case of a World War II-era bomber, for example, a dark olive drab was common. If the base coat is thin and still shows primer, feel free to go back over it until the primer disappears
- Give your model a wash. A wash is created by thinning a paint with water until it is so thin it runs into the cracks and crevasses of your model. You can also use ink to wash your model but it also needs to be thinned. Just make your washes a darker shade than the base coat to help make the deeper details appear even deeper and more shadowed
- Highlight the raised portions of the model using lighter shades of the original color. For the bomber above, for example, put a drop or two of white paint into about four drops of olive drab. Then you can lightly paint those colors over the raised features of the model
- Drybrush the most pronounced features of your model. Drybrushing involves putting paint on the brush but wiping some of it away on a paper towel. This makes what remains far dryer and more apt to adhere to raised features without running into the cracks. Drybrushing, however, can damage the brush you're using if you don't regularly clean it
- Buy paints and painting supplies from TheWarStore.net (see Resources below). The War Store stocks a huge selection of model paints and brushes from manufacturers like Vallejo, Citadel and Tamiya. You'll even find some great paint sets that include dozens of colors for one low price
