How to Buy a Sun Umbrella:
- Check the UV protection factor (UPF), also known as the sun protection rating, of the umbrella or the fabric of the umbrella. This rating gives you an indication of how much sun is being blocked by the umbrella. A good sun umbrella has a rating of UPF of 50 or more
- Look for a lightweight sun umbrella. There's no reason to lug a cumbersome umbrella around when you can easily find one that weighs less than 1 pound. Golf umbrellas and other large umbrellas may weigh slightly more, but that is proportional to their size
- Buy a sun umbrella that is designed to resist the wind. Double layers and wind vents help wind gusts move through the umbrella without pulling the umbrella inside out. Remember that it can be windy even on sunny days
- Shop for sun umbrellas that are water-resistant as well. You might as well have a multipurpose umbrella that can protect you from the sun and the rain rather than having to buy one for each type of weather. You never know when there might be a sudden downpour on an otherwise sunny day
- Look for large sun umbrellas to provide maximum protection for your whole body. Umbrellas with arcs between 50 and 60 inches in diameter are sufficient to protect you
How to Sew a Sun Umbrella:
Create the Parts:- Take an old umbrella, or a new umbrella you do not mind destroying, and remove the end caps from each rib. Set the end caps aside. Remove the cap on the top of the umbrella, if possible
- Remove the fabric from the umbrella. Carefully work the middle of the fabric out from under the top cap without tearing if you were not able to remove the cap in Step 1
- Open the umbrella fully and measure the distance between each rib at the bottom of the umbrella. Mark down this measurement on a sheet of paper
- Iron the umbrella's original fabric so that you have a flat piece to work with. Use this piece as your pattern
- Lay out a single layer of the fabric you have chosen for your sun umbrella. Place the original umbrella fabric on top of this layer
- Trace around the outside of the pattern piece with a fabric pencil, 5/8 inch away from the edge. Cut along this circle. Discard the pattern piece
- Find the center of the new umbrella fabric piece and cut a small hole there
Assemble the Sun Umbrella:
- Fold the outside edge of the sun umbrella fabric piece under 1/4 inch and iron it flat. Clip any edges that bunch or pull
- Fold the outside edge under another 1/2 inch and pin it in place. Sew along the folded edge, all the way around the piece. Iron the edge flat
- Make marks with the fabric pencil along the outside edge, making sure that each mark is separated by the distance you measured in Step 3
- Open the umbrella ribs and lay the new fabric over them. Push the top cap through the hole in the center of the fabric, if you could not remove the cap initially. If you removed the cap initially, reattach it over the hole
- Match up the markings on the bottom edge of the fabric with the bottom of each rib. Reattach the end caps over the fabric
How to Care for an Umbrella:
- Allow your umbrella to fully dry before storing. If you fold it while it is still wet, mildew can form causing staining and odor. Store in a garage or basement over night for proper drying. Otherwise, leave it open and propped on one side
- Clean your umbrella according to the care instructions provided on the label or packaging. Otherwise, simply spot clean with a washcloth and warm water. Avoid using harsh cleaners that can damage the waterproofing coating within the fabric. Cleaners can also cause discoloring
- Remember that a rain umbrella is not a beach umbrella. Umbrellas designed for use in the rain are likely to sustain damage after prolonged use in the sun
- Use care during particularly windy weather conditions. A strong gust of wind can be damaging to an umbrella if it catches the umbrella and forces it to bend in the opposite direction
- Follow the natural creases of the umbrella when folding it. While your temptation may be to crumple the umbrella into a storable manner as quickly as possible, it is best to return the umbrella to it's original position. Proper storing will prevent any bending of the spokes or awkward creasing in the fabric
How to Repair a Sun Umbrella:
- Sew small tears/rips with a needle and thread. Limit stitching to tears no more than four inches in length. Knot the thread before cutting it to keep the stitches in place. Look for heavy-duty thread if possible or double stitch the tear for extra protection against further rips
- Use fabric glue on tears five inches and longer. Place glue on either side of the torn fabric and use your hands to push the fabric together so the fabric slightly overlaps. Put the umbrella on a flat surface so the glued tear can dry properly. Try placing a heavy object on top of the tear to help it stay together when drying. If you do not want glue on the heavy object, put a plastic bag over the tear beforehand
- Apply patch kits to tears more than six inches long. Umbrella patch kits can be purchased at most retail stores. Patches are either stitched on ironed on
- Remove any fraying along the edges of the umbrella with scissors. "Stitch along the new edge" according to the Long Fence University website to prevent future fraying
