How to Change a Flushometer:

Most commercial and office toilets and urinals use a Flushometer system rather than a tank. The Flushometer system reduces the amount of water necessary to flush. When changing a Flushometer, it is not necessary to change the plumbing pipe. The Flushometer head can be removed from the pipe for cost-effective replacement. Many companies now replace the old manual Flushometer system with an electronic sensor head.

• Instructions
• Remove the control stop cap on the right side of the toilet plumbing with a pair of pliers. The control stop cap covers the water shut-off valve for the Flushometer plumbing. The cap pops off with a little pressure from the pliers.
• Turn the water supply knob clockwise with the pliers to shut off the water supply. If the plumbing uses a handle, push it down to relieve any excess water pressure. If the unit has an electronic sensor head, stand in front of the sensor head for 30 seconds then move away from it. This usually removes any excess water pressure.
• Remove the head of the Flushometer assembly with a strap or pipe wrench. The head is the top of the plumbing and screws into the upper pipe. If the system has an electronic head, turn the ring below the electronic eye counterclockwise with the strap wrench to remove the head.
• Pull any loose parts of the head out of the top of the plumbing pipe. Remove the nut securing the handle assembly to the plumbing pipe with a pipe wrench if the unit uses a handle.
• Installation of New Electronic Head
• Wrap plumber's tape around the threads of the handle opening if you removed a manual handle. Place a rubber O-ring seal into the handle cap that comes with the replacement kit. Thread the cap onto the handle opening threads until you cannot turn it by hand. Turn the cap another full turn with the pipe wrench.
• Pull the tab off the bottom of the replacement Flushometer head. Insert the metal end of the diaphragm into the hole inside the head. The O-ring on the stem of the diaphragm must fully insert into the hole inside the head.
• Install the head assembly into the top of the plumbing pipe with the sensor facing away from the wall. Thread the lower ring onto the pipe threads until you can no longer turn them by hand. Tighten the ring another full turn with a strap wrench.
• Pull the tab out of the top of the replacement head. This activates the electronic sensor inside the head. Turn the water supply knob counterclockwise to supply water to the toilet. Push the cap over the top of the water supply valve until it snaps into position.
• Stand in front of the toilet for 30 seconds then move away out of range of the electronic sensor. The toilet should flush.

How Is a Flushometer Installed?

• Prepare the Supply Pipe
• Before a flushometer can be installed, the water supply pipe must be prepared. If the pipe does not have a male thread for the flushometer's components to attach to, the pipe must be shortened slightly so that an adapter can be attached. The wall flange and cover tube that are supplied with the flushometer are then placed over the pipe and attached to the wall, securing the supply pipe and preventing accidental movement. The control stop is then attached to the pipe, though the cap that is attached to the stop cap will not be placed onto the control stop at this time.
• Install the Vacuum Breaker
• Once the supply pipe has been prepared and outfitted with the control stop section, the next step in the installation of a flushometer is the assembly of the vacuum breaker. The assembly is fairly straightforward, with the main vacuum breaker tube connecting to the spud coupling and the spud flange. Nylon and rubber gaskets are included in the assembly to help ensure an airtight fit of the vacuum breaker's parts. The vacuum breaker serves an important purpose in the operation of a flushometer. It ensures that a vacuum that could cause improper function is unable to form within the flush system.
• Install the Flushometer
• The flushometer itself is connected to the control stop, giving it a solid connection to the water supply pipe. The vacuum breaker assembly is then connected to the bottom of the flushometer, with a friction ring gasket being installed between the main flushometer unit and the top of the vacuum breaker to preserve an airtight seal and protect the vacuum breaker from damage if the connecting coupling is too tight. The connections to the control stop and the vacuum breaker are both made by hand to prevent over tightening.
• Finalize the Installation
• The supply line is flushed out once the flushometer has been connected to prevent air bubbles within the water supply. Once the supply has been flushed out, the control stop can be adjusted to deliver the desired amount of water with each flush. After these adjustments are made and the flushometer is functioning properly, a cap is generally placed onto the control stop valve to prevent it from being adjusted by anyone who is not authorized to change the amount of water that is released with each flush.

• A flushometer (also known as a flushometer valve) is a device that's present on tankless toilets (such as urinals) and controls the release of water. They are most frequently found in public restrooms. When this type of toilet is flushed, the flushometer discharges a very high-pressure stream of water throughout the main chamber to wash away any waste that may be present. Because of the way they operate, flushometers require full access to a large, continuous supply of water and full water pressure.
• How a Flushometer Is Hooked Up
• Flushometers are generally connected directly to a water line and do not store water in the same manner as a traditional toilet tank. They are hooked up to a highly pressurized water line via a series of wide pipes. The wide pipes are necessary to allow a large amount of water to flow into the toilet in a matter of seconds. A valve blocks the opening to the pipe that feeds into the toilet, and that valve is attached to the flushometer's flushing mechanism (usually either a handle or motion-sensor device).

• When a toilet with a flushometer is flushed, that flush opens the valve that blocks the water pipe. A large volume of water dumps quickly into the toilet's main chamber.
