DisplayPort:

- DisplayPort is a digital display interface standard put forth by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). It defines a new royalty-free, digital audio/video interconnect, intended to be used primarily between a computer and its display, or a computer and a home-theater system.
- The first version was approved in May 2006, version 1.1a was approved on April 2, 2007, and the current version 1.2 was approved
- DisplayPort is designed to replace digital (DVI) and analog component video (VGA) connectors in computer monitors and video cards, as well as replace internal digital LVDS links in computer monitor panels and TV panels.
- DisplayPort can provide the same functionality as HDMI but is not expected to displace HDMI in high-definition consumer electronics devices
Mini DisplayPort:

- The Mini DisplayPort is a miniaturized version of the DisplayPort digital display interface. Announced by Apple in the fourth quarter of 2008, today it is used in all new Macs (MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, Xserve), and the LED Cinema Display. Also in Toshiba Satellite Pro S500, Tecra M11, A11, S11, HP Envy 14 and 17 notebooks.
- Unlike its Mini-DVI and Micro-DVI predecessors, Mini DisplayPort is capable of driving resolutions up to 2560×1600, commonly used with 30-inch displays. With a suitable adapter, Mini DisplayPort may be used to drive displays with a VGA, DVI or HDMI interface.
- Shortly after announcing the Mini DisplayPort, Apple announced that it would license the connector technology with no fee. Apple reserves the right to void the license should the licensee "commence an action for patent infringement against Apple".
- The following year, in early 2009, VESA announced that Mini DisplayPort would be included in the upcoming DisplayPort 1.2 specification.
- In the fourth quarter of 2009, VESA officially announced that the Mini DisplayPort has been adopted. All devices using the Mini DisplayPort must comply with the 1.1a standard.

- Cons: Build materials rather cheap but is still working for me so not really an issue. Probably wouldn't hold up if used portable.
- Other Thoughts: I use it to drive my external drives without any fuss. Like to keep my system clean of all the extra clutter. This works with everything.

10-02-2011- Other Thoughts: Very useful SATA cable. I am a network administrator, and I have to deal a lot with old HDs. I no longer have to open the case just to see the contents of the HD. The job is so much easier now.

01-17-2011- Pros: Does exactly what it says it does, reads IDE, IDE-mini or SATA drives over a USB port.
- Cons: Power supply needs a little wiggling if used, but not at all bad.
- Other Thoughts: I maintain/fix a lot of computers and there are countless situations where you need to read/write a hard drive. Doing so usually involves installing it in a compatible system (supposing you have one) rebooting, doing what you need to and disconnecting it. This gadget makes it much easier, hook it up, connect to USB, do your thing. Incredibly handy when you need something from a drive in a broken system.
