How to Troubleshoot the Problems on Vacuum Cleaners

- You're busy cleaning up your living room to get ready for an event when your vacuum cleaner stops working properly. It could lose power, become clogged or even produce a smell of burning rubber. Troubleshoot the vacuum cleaner's problems so you can get back to vacuuming up your living room and cleaning it of debris. Most repairs are easy enough to be performed at home. For complicated issues, consult a service center for repair
- Plug the vacuum cleaner into a different outlet if your cleaner wasn't turning on. The outlet could be the problem. If it still doesn't work, plug in a different working appliance, such as a lamp, to rule out an electrical problem with the outlet. If it's the vacuum cleaner, you'll need to bring it into a service center
- Turn off the power to the vacuum cleaner if power wasn't the problem. Unplug the unit from the electrical wall outlet
- Open the back of the vacuum cleaner and inspect the vacuum bag or receptacle. If the bag is full, the suction will decrease. Replace a full bag with an empty bag, or empty out the receptacle into a bag-lined trash can. Close the back of the vacuum cleaner
- Lay the vacuum upside down so you have access to the bottom of the unit. Look for hairs and string that may have gotten caught in the rollers of the cleaner. Hairs can restrict roller movement, and can even create a smell of burnt rubber when the vacuum cleaner is running. Remove the hairs. You may need scissors or a knife to cut out tightly wound string
- Inspect the rubber vacuum belt on the bottom of the cleaner. It attaches around rollers. If this has snapped, the unit won't suck up debris properly. Remove the old, broken belt and purchase a new belt made specifically for your vacuum. Replace it by following the directions in your manual
- Test the vacuum cleaner by plugging it in and turning it on. If it still doesn't suck up debris well, turn it back off, unplug it and lay it upside down. Reach into the tube at the bottom of the cleaner and pull out any debris that's clogging the airway. Perform this task for the hose attachment as well. Once the debris is removed, the vacuum cleaner should work properly again
How to Replace a Vacuum Cleaner Plug

- If you have a vacuum cleaner with a damaged electrical plug, removing and replacing the plug is a much cheaper option than replacing the vacuum. Replace a damaged plug before using the vacuum cleaner. The task may seem daunting initially, especially if you prefer not to work with anything electrical. But if you have the correct tools, this repair is basic and will not take much time
- Cut off the vacuum cleaner plug using a pair of wire cutters, also called diagonal pliers. Cut behind the plug, allowing you to retain as much length of the cord as possible
- Purchase a comparable replacement plug by taking the original plug to a home improvement store. Choose a two-prong or three-prong plug, depending on the configuration of the plug you are replacing. For a three-prong plug, make certain that the replacement matches the original in volts and amps
- Remove the set of screws from the replacement plug, using a slotted screwdriver. There may be one to three screws. Remove the casing from the plug, which allows you access inside the plug.
- Insert the end of the vacuum cleaner cord up through the back end of the replacement plug
- Slice a 2-inch parallel cut into the cord's outer sheathing using a utility knife and starting from the cut end. Peel or cut away the sheathing to expose the 2 inches of wire inside. Strip 1 inch of insulation off the end of each of the cord wires, using wire strippers
- Loosen the terminal screws inside the plug, using a slotted screwdriver. Bend the end of each of the cord wires in a clockwise position, using a pair of needle-nose pliers. Loop the black wire around the gold or copper screw, then tighten the screw using the screwdriver. Attach the white wire to the silver screw, then tighten it. If there is a copper wire, attach it to the green screw and tighten the screw
- Place the disk, or casing, back onto the plug. Install the screws to hold the casing in place, tightening them with the screwdriver
How to Fix Vacuum Cleaner Suction

- Vacuums can lose suction over time for a number of reasons. The most common reason is a clogged filter or a full vacuum bag. When these become full of dirt, the motor works less efficiently and the vacuum will not suck up dirt like it should. Malfunctioning beater brushes or clogged hoses are other reasons the vacuum may no longer work. If you try all these steps and the suction does not return, take the vacuum to a repair shop
- Remove the vacuum cleaner's filter canister if you have a bag-less vacuum. Empty the canister. Wipe the filter clean with a paper towel over a trash can and then wash the filter according to the manufacturer's instructions. If you have a bag vacuum, remove the vacuum bag and replace it
- Plug the vacuum in and lower the beater brush all the way to the floor. Turn the vacuum on and turn it on its side so you can see if the beater brush is turning. A malfunctioning beater brush is a common reason for a vacuum to lose suction
- Turn off the vacuum and lay it back on the floor on its side if the beater brush is not working. Turn the beater manually. If it will not turn, inspect it for strings, pieces of plastic, or any other long object that may be entangled in the brush. Use a pair of scissors to cut the blockage free
- Replace the beater belt according to the manufacturer's instructions if the beater spins freely and there is no obstruction. This process varies with your vacuum model, but generally involves removing the front cover and the beater brush, removing the broken belt and slipping on a new one
- Turn on the vacuum and place your hand over the vacuum hose to check for suction. If you do not feel any, turn off the vacuum and detach the hose. Look through the hose for any obstruction. Push a broom handle through the hose to remove it
