Wall Clock Projects

Most homes contain at least one wall clock, either for decoration or as a functional timepiece. Wall clocks range from simple, modern designs to ornate antiques featuring fine craftsmanship. Whether you want to build a clock from scratch or modify an existing clock, there are several types of wall clock projects that anyone can undertake
Refinishing
Refinishing an existing clock is a good way to make use of an antique wall clock that might not look its best after years of use or neglect. Begin by carefully removing the movement, dial and pendulum, leaving only the wooden case.
If there are any glass panes, like those on access doors, cover them with tape and newspaper. Strip the existing finish and sand the wood smooth before applying new varnish, stain or paint. Once reassembled, the clock will look as good as new.
Building
Building a wall clock from scratch is another project idea for more intrepid builders. Building the case from wood requires moderate carpentry skills and some basic tools, but there's no limit to the range of styles and sizes when you make your own clock.
Quartz movements and clock dials should be easy to obtain from a hobby shop, hardware store or Internet retailer. There are also many clock kits available, some of which contain all of the necessary parts and others that provide only the basics, giving the builder more creative control.
Stenciling
Another wall clock project that fully incorporates the wall is stenciling a clock onto the wall itself. Use a commercial stencil or draw one of your own with numbers to mark the time, and paint it onto a brick, wood or drywall surface. Mark the center and drill a hole large enough to install a quartz movement directly in the wall.
Stenciled clocks have the advantage of blending nicely into the room. You can also choose a color for the stencil that complements the room decor.
Embroidering
You can also embroider a clock's face with any design you choose. Simply complete an embroidery project on standard hoops, making sure that it is large enough to serve as a clock's dial. Mount the embroidery on a wooden frame with a hole large enough for a clock movement in the center. Cut a small hole in the center of the embroidered surface for movement to come through so you can attach the hands. Finally, mount the entire clock in a round or octagon-shaped frame.
Painting
Finally, you can customize an existing wall clock by painting your own designs on its dial or case. Most inexpensive plastic wall clocks are easy to snap apart, giving you access to the paper or cardboard dial with the numbers on it. Remove the dial and paint it using oil or acrylic paints. Flatten it under a heavy weight before reassembling the clock so that it will lie flat inside the case and not cause the hands to rub against your new artwork.
How to Decorate With a Group of Wall Clocks
Clocks can be distinctive room accents, especially when arranged together on a wall. When you're grouping clocks on a wall, consider the space they're in and coordinate them with the style of the room. There are a number of imaginative ways to group wall clocks, but a geometric pattern is a simple and modern look that can be worked into nearly any room design- Determine where in the room you want to hang your clocks. Choose a wall that is unadorned so your clocks will take center stage. The decor in the room should feel balanced, so try to pick a wall that's opposite one with large furniture or prominent wall decorations.
- Choose clocks that are made of different materials, but try to stay within the general color palette of the room so they don't look out of place. Clocks that are the same shape but different colors can look stylish in a modern-looking arrangement.
- Hang the clocks in a geometric pattern. Try to re-create shapes that are present in the room; for instance, if you have a diamond-patterned rug you could build a diamond-shaped clock arrangement.
- Set the clocks at different times and remove the batteries. In a travel-themed room, you could set them to different time zones and leave them running, but multiple ticking clocks can quickly become irritating in a quiet room.
- Hang a plain, empty picture frame around the clocks to create the look of cutting-edge art.
Retro Clock Styles

According to TLC, people who decorate in retro styles are drawn to the style because it's fun, bright and slightly irreverent. "Retro" encompasses the decorating styles made famous during the 20th century, ranging from the classic look of the Art Deco era in the 1920s and '30s to the "Love Power" look of the '60s. No piece of furniture or accessory was left untouched in each era. Everything from couches to clocks felt the influence of retro styles
Felix the Cat
The adorable cat with his wagging tail and crazy eyes is one very famous example of a retro clock. These adorable clocks made their appearance in the 1930s, according to the Kit Cat website, making people living in the Depression era smile when they had little to smile about. Felix went on to be a "star" of cartoons and books. You can still find vintage Felix the Cat clocks at antique stores, but plenty of replicas now exist if you're not concerned about having an antique so much as you just want to have this friendly cat in your home.
Art Deco
Art Deco---that machine age aesthetic that dominated the '20s and '30s---touched just about everything in the world, including clocks, according to Collector's Weekly. These retro clocks were constructed of sturdy, natural materials such as hard woods, marble, onyx, brass and glass. Often they featured figurines or geometric designs inspired by the age and the style. A variety of these types of clocks still exist, including ones you can place on your mantle, on the wall or on a table.
Advertising Clocks
According to 2 Clicks, old advertising clocks did more than just help the people of that era tell the time. They also kept the names of prominent advertisers front and center in the public's mind by putting the advertisers' names and logos in front of consumers' eyes every day. Companies that used clocks for advertising included Coca Cola, Harley-Davidson and Frostie. Typically, they were round with very large faces and thin frames. The colors of the frames usually ranged from black to the primary colors.
Sunburst
The sunburst clock goes back as far as the Deco era but was a popular fixture up until the '50s. This spiny clock features a round clock face in the middle surrounded by tines made of metal. The clocks were mostly made from wood and brass, and some featured as many as 48 spokes in the sunburst. These clocks adorned many a space over the fireplace mantle or above the kitchen stove in years past.Package Included:

08-25-2011- Other Thoughts: The Retro Wall Clock is great looking. However, after a few weeks, the hour hand stopped working for about 10 hours. Once I reset the clock to the correct time, there has not been another problem. Hope it doesn't do it again!

08-12-2011- Other Thoughts: I am a creative professional and I can't have plain boring clock in my studio. But I need to be able to read time even when the window is blocked to darken the room. So this Wood Wall Clock is perfect for me. High contrast (easy to read), looks normal until you notice something unique about it, and reasonable price. Others noted that this Retro Wall Clock is cheaply made. Yes, if you look at it closely, you can tell it's mass produced cheap plastic, but once you hang it on a wall, it doesn't matter. Mine worked fine, at least for five months so far.

07-28-2011- Other Thoughts: Wood Wall Clock is easy to see the time from far away
. Easy to see in low light due to the silver on black contrast
. I like the colors and the way the block numbers stand out
. It's quiet - I'm sensitive to ticking sounds - they really bother me. If I stay at someone's house they laugh because any ticking clock in my bedroom gets put outside. But I do not hear any ticking from this clock, even sitting at my desk right under it. (I must have received one of the quieter ones - I would also return a loud ticker.)

06-17-2011- Other Thoughts: This Wood Wall Clock looks great on the wall of our media room. I've had it a little over a year and it keeps perfect time. Very happy with this clock and considering a couple other Infinity Instruments clocks for other rooms.
