Kitchen Wall Decor Ideas:

A kitchen is a place to live. It needs to be bright, cheery and clean. It should make people feel welcome by inviting them inside to cook, eat and socialize. One overlooked space in most kitchens is the walls. They are painted and left alone. These can become display pieces of decor if handled right. Just use a little inspiration and tackle the blank space on the wall.- Cookware Obsession
What cook does not love new pots and pans, or that little strange gadget that is supposed to make meal preparation easier? After a bit of time the new cookware is thrust into a cupboard in favor of the old standard pots and pans and that gadget really did not make much of a difference. Instead of hiding all the shiny cookware away, mount a metal pan rack near the top of the wall. Hang that nearly brand new set of pots and pans on the rack. Paint a piece of peg board and hang the unique, strange kitchen gadgets out on display. This gives you more room in the cupboards and drawers and gives visitors something to talk about.
- Country Style
A country kitchen usually means checkers and farm animals. Purchase towels and pot holders featuring geese, cows, chickens and even the kitchen cat. Mount a wide shelf on the wall and put a country collection of animal cookie jars on the shelf. Edge the shelf with lace or a black and white checkered ribbon. Screw in cup hooks on the bottom of the shelf and hang the coffee mugs up out of the cupboard. Below the coffee cups, hang the fancy, do-not-use pot holders, oven mitts and dish towels on the wall. Try to find pot holders and towels that match the cookie jars.
- Sponge Design
Sometimes all it takes is an interesting paint design on the wall to liven up the kitchen decor. Either buy or make stencil cut-outs in the shape of animals, flowers or just about any design you wish. Next cut a kitchen sponge in half. Dip this in thinned acrylic paint. Hold the stencil up to the wall and dab the opening with the sponge. Make a border near the top of the wall, or go wild and print the image in random places along the wall. Once you are finished, throw away the used sponge and wash up with soap and water.
How to Install a Kitchen Shelf:
If you're short on space in your kitchen, you can install a kitchen shelf to create more space. You can install a standard kitchen shelf between cabinets or along walls to make more space above your countertops or on your walls, or you can add rolling shelves in your kitchen cabinets to make the goods in the cabinets more accessible. Adding kitchen shelving to your home can make the space more accessible and efficient, but be sure to secure shelves correctly to keep them from falling or breaking at a later date.
Basic Kitchen Shelves- Measure the depth of your wall cabinets with a measuring tape. This is the width of your shelf. Measure the length of space where you want to put your shelf. This is the shelf length.
- Use a circular saw to cut your shelf to size. Cut, glue and nail another piece of wood to the front as trim to cover the rough edge of your shelf, if desired.
- Fill any gaps or holes in the shelf surface with paintable wood filler. Let the filler dry and harden. Sand the entire surface of the shelf until it's smooth. Apply a coat or primer. Let it dry. Apply a coat or two of your desired paint color.
- Use a stud finder to find the studs in your kitchen wall. Mark them with a pencil.
- Hang mounted shelf tracks on the wall in the center of the stud. Use a level to make sure the track is straight and plumb. Drill a hole through the top hole in the track. Screw the track to the wall. Drill a hole through the bottom hole in the track. Place a screw in the hole and screw it to the wall. Repeat the process for any remaining screw holes. Install at least one more track using the same process.
- Slide the shelf bracket into the mounted-support at the appropriate height. Lay a level across the brackets, once installed, to make sure all brackets are level and even. Remove the level. Place the shelf on the bracket. Repeat the process for any additional shelves
Pull-out Kitchen Shelves
- Measure the depth, width and height of your cabinet with a measuring tape. Open the cabinet door. Measure the distance from the side of the cabinet to the actual usable opening, where the pull-out shelf will be able to slide out. This is the thickness of your cleat. Measure the width and length of the rail you plan to install for the shelf. Cut your cleat the width and length of the rail with a circular saw. Cut a second cleat for the second rail on the other side.
- Create or purchase a pull-out drawer to meet those measurements. Remember the drawer needs to be small enough that it can slide through the opening of the cabinet door.
- Remove the door to the cabinet where you're installing your shelf. Remove the sliding section from the rail for your pull-out shelf. Place two 1/8 inch or one 1/4 inch shim under the rail. Remove the rail. Place one of the cleats you cut earlier flush against the wall on top of the shim. Attach the cleat to the wall using 1-1/4 inch screws. Place the shelf slide on top of the shim. Screw it into place per the manufacturer's instructions. Repeat the process on the other side.
- Attach the other part of the rail to the sides of your shelf with screws. Make sure the ends of the rail line up flush with the ends of your shelf.
- Slide your pull-out shelf onto the rail tracks
Tips & Warnings:
- If your shelves are more than 36 inches long, you will need to install at least one more track to support the shelf
- Once you've installed your shims and cleats, measure the distance again to make sure your shelf will fit correctly
- If you do not install shims under the rails, your shelf will scrape the floor of the cabinet and will not pull-out correctly
