How to Clean Bath Toys

Bath toys are a fun distraction for your little one while they get clean, but the constant water and often the lack of opportunity to dry effectively can cause the toys to become moldy or collect hard water deposits. There are several options available to allow you to sufficiently clean bath toys instead of replacing them every few months

• Assess whether the bath toys in question can or should be saved. Any material that is soft or porous and is growing black mold or mildew should be thrown out or replaced
• Put the bath toys in the dishwasher. Be smart, however about which bath toys are likely to be able to withstand the extremely hot water. Anything that is hard plastic is likely to be fine, but anything made of soft plastic or material should be washed with another method. For best results, use a dish washing detergent that has bleach. Put the toys on the top rack only and forgo the drying cycle. Remove them and squeeze out any excess water. Spread them out on a towel and allow them to dry thoroughly
• Fill the bathtub 1/4 of the way full with warm water. Add 1 cup of bleach and submerge the toys. Allow them to soak for up to twenty minutes. Then rinse the toys thoroughly to remove all bleach residue and squeeze out any excess water. Allow the toys to air-dry
• Mix a cup of warm water with a teaspoon of dish soap (one that has bleach is most effective for killing mold and germs). Rinse each toy individually under warm water and use an old (clean) toothbrush or scrub brush to apply the soap solution to the toy. Pay particular attention to the cracks and crevices where bacteria may be lurking. Rinse each toy and allow to dry thoroughly
• For a more natural approach to cleaning your bath toys, use vinegar. Mix four parts white vinegar to one part warm water. Submerge the toys completely or apply the solution to each toy with a sponge. Use a toothbrush to clean mold or deposits out of corners and crevices

• Although all bath toys should be cleaned periodically no matter how well you take care of them in the meantime, your job will be significantly easier each time if you allow the toys the environment and time to dry thoroughly before putting them away
• Shake them off and squeeze excess water out of any that may have collected it inside
• Spread them out to dry and store them in a mesh or other open receptacle that is not conducive to mildew growth

How to Avoid Mold on Children's Bath Toys

• Using a glue gun to seal the hole in bath toys will prevent mold from returning - permanently! First, here are simple steps for cleaning existing mold
• Mix a solution of bleach water with 1 part bleach to 10 parts water.
• Add toys to the cleaning solution and allow to sit for 15 minutes. If toys have a hole and the mold is inside the toy, make sure to suck cleaning solution into the toy
• Squeeze the water out of the toys and rinse with clear water (inside and out). Allow to dry completely
• Prevent mold from ever returning by sealing the hole in the bath toys with a glue gun. NOTE: If your toy has a "squeak" mechanism, sealing the hole will also prevent it from squeaking. If you'd prefer not to do that, you will just need to clean the toy again in the future
