What is Webcam?

• A webcam is a video camera which feeds its images in real time to a computer or computer network, often via USB, ethernet or Wi-Fi.
• Their most popular use is the establishment of video links, permitting computers to act as videophones or videoconference stations. This common use as a camera for the web gives the webcam its name. Other popular uses include security surveillance and computer vision.

How to Install a Webcam?

• Installing a webcam can be done with a little patience in a few easy steps. Whether used for work conferencing, staying in touch with friends and  family or for surveillance, a webcam can become an essential part of a coputer setup

Instructions:

• Purchase a camera. Webcams can range from a basic model for around $30 to ones that contain a motion sensor for around $350 or so. Most mid-priced models come with a microphone install
• Decide on what this camera will be used for and choose accordingly
• Read the installation instructions completely before attempting to install the camera. Although this may seem tedious and unnecessary, it can save time and headaches in the long run.
• Back up the computer's hard drive just to be safe. This will allow for a speedy recovery should the installation mess up the computer
• Install the webcam software. Before deciding to install the disc that came with the camera, check the Internet for an updated version of the software and download that if available
• Plug in the webcam. The software should give a prompt at the appropriate time. Cameras are usually installed with a USB cable. If installed correctly, the computer will acknowledge so by popping up a message saying it can see the new device
• Download an instant message program if using the web camera for chatting. Some free IM download programs include Yahoo Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger and Apple iChat

• A cheap camera that gets the job done. I use it to video chat via gchat, but it also works for Skype. As others have noted, there is no microphone with the camera. For set up, all you need to do is plug it in. If it doesn't work right away, try restarting your computer.

• this product surely delivers the goods. A decent cam not enables me to chat with my family online. The lights are adjustable for brightness depending on the surroundings. Nothing to install, just connect and your set. All in all a decent buy and recommended for users with low budget.

• Can't complain about the price, but I don't know how it does night vision? Maybe I have yet to figure that out. The LEDs do make it light up well for darker rooms. I don't use it a ton, but it was so cheap that I can't say I regret this purchase at all. Does what I needed and pretty simple to work.

• A good webcam, is currently working great here. It has a buttom that changes image features, such as black&white, red, yellow, and etc. The 'night vision' actually are the three white leds, that can be turned on through a dimmer, it does not mean it can see in total darkness.
  Yet, a very reasonable and inexpensive choice.

• I've tried this cam on both Windows XP and various Linux distros, and it just works after plugging it in. No drivers to install, in fact, the cam came without any disks. I may buy several more.

• It's not high resolution, but it's great quality anyway.
  It's virtually no set up, just plug it into your USB port and go! You may have to restart your computer with it plugged in if it doesn't work the first time.
