How to Install an iPod Video Battery?

  • The iPod Video is the informal name for Apple's 5th Generation of iPod Classic. Replacing the battery on this iPod is a task that can be quickly performed with the proper tools found in a battery replacement kit.

Battery Replacement Kit

  • Purchase a battery replacement kit for the iPod Video (see Resources). The kit should consist of a replacement battery, a small screwdriver, and a plastic iPod opening tool.

Opening the iPod

  • There is a seam where the front and back covers of the iPod meet. Insert the opening tool into this seam, and run it around the perimeter of the iPod, prying back and forth slightly. When the casing comes completely apart, be careful not to separate the cases too far. The battery must first be removed.

The Battery

  • Detach the battery from its mooring, located inside the back cover of the iPod. Next, unplug the ribbon cable that runs from the battery into the logic board of the iPod. Plug the ribbon cable of the new battery into the logic board, place the new battery in the mooring, and snap the iPod shut.

How to Change an iPod Battery?

Many an iPod user has experienced the frustration of a failing iPod battery, crying in despair when charging the iPod all day yields an hour (or less) of personal audio bliss. If you don't want to give your week's grocery money in order to fix your iPod, you might want to consider replacing the battery yourself. It might seem daunting, but it's really not as difficult as it might seem--and if you choose the DIY method, you'll enough money to buy a few new albums at the iTunes store!

Instructions

  • Make sure the "hold" switch is on.
  • Place the iPod on a flat surface, face-up.
  • Find the space between the white or black plastic iPod front and the metal back on the iPod's right side (your right when you are looking at it face-up). Insert one nylon tool or the screwdriver into this space. It may be very tight, but you should be able to squeeze in whatever pry tool you are using after a few tries.
  • If you're using the nylon tools, insert the second tool next to the first and pry the iPod open. If you're using the screwdriver, push it up to remove the iPod front. Make sure you're very careful when peeling the front and back apart. Delicate connecting wires still remain holding the two parts together.
  • Set the iPod down so you can see the inside of the Pod on both sides of the shell. The back (metal part) of the shell should be on the left. The plastic part should be on the right.
  • You'll see a battery at the top of the back (metal) shell. Attached to the battery is a gold "ribbon," which contains a wire. This ribbon is connected to the bottom of the front (opposite) shell. Carefully pull it out of the shell-- it's attached to a power connector and should slide out easily.
  • Remove the battery from the metal part of the iPod. It is stuck on with a bit of glue, but should peel off fairly easily with the help of the nylon tools. Be VERY careful if you use a screwdriver to remove it.
  • Attach the ribbon-like wire from your new battery to the power connector that you pulled the old wire out of (on the bottom of the front, non-metal shellof the iPod).
  • Place the new battery where the old battery use to be on the top of the metal side. Make sure that the wire you just connected is on the BOTTOM side of the battery (or just make sure the new battery placement looks like the old one did).
  • Reconnect the two sides of your iPod.
  • Charge your new battery and enjoy your very functional iPod.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always try to use nylon tools. Metal tools can damage your iPod's metal casing.
  • This method is only for iPod Video. Other iPods may have slightly different battery replacement methods.
