How to Improve a Computers or Laptop CPU Cooling?


  • Laptop computers are compact, giving them great transportability, but packing so much technology into a small space often leads to high heat production while a laptop is in use. When a laptop gets too hot, the CPU may start to overheat, which can lead to crashes and permanent hardware damage. It is important to take steps to improve laptop cooling to make certain the CPU doesn't run too hot.

Instructions:


  • Always use the laptop on a hard surface. Soft surfaces like clothing or pillows stifle ventilation and hamper CPU cooling.
  • Elevate the laptop above the work surface as much as possible. The more space there is between the bottom of the laptop and the surface you are working on, the easier it will be for the heat to escape. You can purchase computer stands to serve this purpose; another option is to use adhesive pads designed for the feet of chairs on the four corners of the laptop.
  • Use a can of compressed air to blow dust out of the laptop's fan vent. Laptops almost always use an internal fan to vent heat out of the computer. Since space is limited, dust can easily collect and reduce the effectiveness of the computers CPU cooling. Blowing out dust with a can of air can improve ventilation.
  • Use fewer programs and reduce performance settings. Laptops are less powerful than desktop computers; demanding too much of a laptop can cause the CPU to run hot. Try running only one program at a time and running programs like games at lower graphics settings.
  • Use AC power whenever possible. Laptop batters get very hot when they are in use, which can make CPUs run hotter. Plug your laptop in whenever you can to reduce battery heat.

How to Apply Thermal Grease to Chip:


  • Shut down your computer and unplug it
  • Open the case by removing the side panel that gives you access to the inside hardware. The access hatch may be on the left or right side of the computer case. Look for a latch or quick release that might let you easily remove and reseat the case hatch
  • Touch something metal to discharge any static buildup. Flip the latch on your heatsink to dislodge it. The heatsink is likely a big chunk of metal and a fan that is attached on top of the main processor, a shiny square located on the motherboard. The motherboard is the main chip, usually the largest in a computer system. Carefully remove the unlatched heatsink by unhooking the rest of the mechanism from the fastener hooks. Remember the direction your heatsink is facing when you take it off. This will help you get it back on later
  • Dispense a dab of thermal grease about the size of a pea directly in the center of your processor chip. Use a business card to evenly smooth the thermal grease across the surface of the processor
  • Reseat the heatsink, align it with its seating hooks, and latch back into place. Close the computer case, plug the computer back in and reboot the computer
