How to Buff Aluminum Wheels

Buffing aluminum wheels can take out scratches, stains and blemishes in old wheels and make them look shiny and new. This is a task most often done by body shops using a giant machine in which the wheel is taken off to be buffed. While this works well, there are do-it-yourself options that can effectively buff aluminum wheels. The best option uses hand held buffing tools such as a buffing wheel or a power drill with a buffing attachment. Be sure the wheel you are going to buff is bare aluminum with no paint or clear coat. The buffing will remove anything other than the aluminum.

• Cut away any stickers, wheel weights or anything that will get in the way of buffing the wheel, with the razor blade.
• Clean the wheels using a heavy duty degreaser and scouring or scrubbing pads. This will prevent any dirt from being buffed into the wheel. Once the wheels are clean, rise them with water and dry with a towel.
• Apply a coarse buffing compound to the buffing wheel (or drill buffing attachment). Buff over the entire wheel. Wipe clean with mineral spirits and a rag. If the wheel still has imperfections, repeat the buffing and clean the wheel again.
• Apply the liquid polish with a rag to the wheel, to give a final shiny finish.

Tips & Warnings:

• Use a new buffing wheel or attachment for each wheel. This will prevent the transference of any dirt from one wheel to the next.
• Wear safety goggles, gloves and a mask when buffing tires. This will protect from fumes and working with power tools.

• The ball worked well with the Billet Polish to get a mirror shine in most areas. However, I would caution you to take your time and use only light to light-medium pressure on the ball because it didn't take too long before it began to tear apart on the inner folds and start thumping around on the surface, making it useless. I had to buy another in order to finish the job and it was starting to tear by the time I was done. Not very cost-effective. BTW, I have used cotton buffing wheels with the compound bars and the like in the past in order to buff various metals and had already used that method here before using the Mini PowerBall and Billet Polish for the final step in the process. So I wasn't trying to grind away at a rough, dull surface with this PowerBall, just bringing up the shine to as close to chrome as possible.

• Bought the Sponge Polishing Ball to do the aluminum wheels on my motorcycle after I tried the regular PowerBall and found it WAY too big to get into all the areas I needed to. Even the Mini was difficult to get into some areas. I wish Mother's would make a Micro or Nano version.

• I purchased the PowerBall Mini to polish up some of the aluminum parts on a vintage motorcycle I am working on. It has done an amazing job. The PowerBall used with Mothers PowerMetal polish has allowed me to polish aluminum parts of the bike to look like chrome with minimal effort. You do not need much pressure when using the PowerBall Mini. And I would also suggest working the polish into the PowerBall Mini before turning your drill on, otherwise all of your polish will splatter off. Once the polish is worked into the foam of the PowerBall it holds onto it well. I am very happy with this product and transaction.

• Got this as a gift for my birthday. I like using it better than an orbital buffer. Better control and can get into tighter spots, plus not having to drag around cords makes the job much easier. I use a Li-Ion cordless drill and have no problem getting the car done on a charge. This also makes it much easier to use paste wax which I think lasts longer than liquid. I wouldn't recommend this on wheels unless they have a very flat design. It got caught a couple times in my rims and tore small pieces out of the applicator. Don't use too much wax, and start slow otherwise it will spray it everywhere.

• The only reason this doesn't receive five stars is because it can be used in only one direction. This isn't a problem, yet, but over time, it's going to wear on one side of the tool than the other. Additionally, you may want to use a different direction on your drill, the typical tool in which to mount this polishing ball, and you can't use reverse on a drill with this polishing ball.
  
  Still, with this, about a teaspoon of plastic scratch remover (used on pinball machine playfields to polish them) and 10 minutes of prep/cleanup per headlight, this little ball got the somewhat cloudy headlight lenses on my wife's car back to crystal clear. Sure, I could have done the same thing with 1,500 and 2,000 grit sandpaper, which I have, but this was much quicker, not messy, and took almost no effort.
  
  Now...to polish the rather large aluminum wheels on our diesel-pusher motorhome. At least this will make it less of a chore.
  
  I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to clean. It's almost spongy in its texture.
