How to Make a Shoulder Strap for a Tripod

Tripod straps are a popular way to carry around tripods, which can be uncomfortable or inconvenient to carry in your hands. A strap provides a way to make transporting tripods much easier without the added inconvenience of a tripod bag, which will require time to pack and unpack before using your tripod. You can make your own tripod strap from a bag strap and attach it to your tripod using D rings and cable ties.

• Locate the nuts on the top of your tripod. These are made of metal or plastic, and are used to loosen or tighten the top of the tripod when a camera is attached.
• Bend a cable tie in half, and thread a D ring onto the end. Place the D ring in the bend and twist the cable tie to secure the D ring in place. The curve of the D ring should face outwards, with the cable tie wrapped around the straight edge.
• Wrap the loop end of the cable tie around the tripod nut as tightly as possible. The D ring should now be tightly secured against the tripod.
• Locate the nuts used to secure the tripod legs into position. These are usually located just above the legs.
• Thread a D ring onto a cable tie as in Step 2. Wind the cable tie around the nut as tightly as possible.
• Clip the bag strap clips onto the D rings, ensuring the clips close fully. If they are held open, move the D-ring slightly so that the bag clip can close.

• Clips at either end make a quick connect, disconnect. I leave the wrap at the top of the tripod connected and disconnect the wrap which holds the three legs together when I set up. There was plenty of strap so I could set the shoulder-comfort pad at the right place relative to the balance of the tripod.

• there are still times when the pictures you take home will be better when the camera is tripod-mounted (panoramas, for example). I am more likely to have the tripod along if it is easy to carry. This strap makes it easy.

• Tripods are a pain, until you need one. This strap takes some of the pain out of taking the gear you really need, without a support crew. You can carry your tripod over one shoulder horizontally, vertically, or put your head throug the loop so the strap crosses your chest diagonoally for a really secure setup. I have two, one attached to each of my full size tripods so all I have to do is grab it and go. I like this strap even if you're just schleping your gear to the car it leaves one hand free for more gear or doors and such.

• makes it easier than having to tie up both my hands holding the tripod, and is comfortable enough. Did some low grade hiking in Colorado with this; worked fine. Because of the design, I think it would fit most pods. I would not spend more on the name brand ones as this is probably as good as they get.

• If you hike long distances with your tripod the Manfrotto is a good choice, if you carry your tripod in and out of your photo shoots I would suggest the Op-Tech for it's balance and smaller size. Both straps are high quality and appears they both will give years of trouble free use.

• The shoulder strap works great. I put it on my tripod the first day I got it and I haven't taken it off since. I don't really need it if I am using a full blown equipment back pack because it has a tripod carrier, but if you are going to use the back packs carrier, this doesn't interfere and there is no reason to remove it. On those days when you just want to take a few lenses in a hand bag though this shoulder sling is just the trick for your tripod.
