How to Use an IR Thermometer:
- A handheld IR thermometer is a great way to detect cold air leaks in the winter and air conditioning performance in the summertime. IR thermometer is a non-contact infrared thermometer with laser pointing that accurately measures temperatures at a distance

- Figure 1 - Spot ratio
- Determine for what jobs you will be using your IR thermometer for so you have an idea of the maximum distance it will be used for. In figure 1, the IR thermometer has a spot ratio of 12:1. That is the thermometer will take an accurate reading for a round object 1 inch in size at a distance of 12 inches. At 3 feet the IR thermometer will take an accurate reading for a round object 3 inches in size. The larger the ratio number the better the instrument's resolution will be

- Figure 2- Outlet check
- To check for cold air leaks coming from windows, electrical outlets, wall fixtures, etc; aim the laser pointer at the target spot and pull the trigger on the thermometer's pistol grip. Hold the thermometer steady until you get a constant temperature reading
- Figure 3 - Checking stove pot temperature
- To measure hot objects aim the IR thermometer at a safe distance and pull the trigger. This allows you to measure dangerously hot objects at a safe distance

- Figure 4 - Checking AC vent temperature To check for central air conditioning performance, go to each room and aim the IR thermometer at the air vent. If there are any big differences in air temperature you will need to check the air ducts for leaks. The IR thermometer can also be used for this purpose

- Figure 5 - Checking attic door for hot/cold leaks
- You can also check the interior of your home in the summer and winter to see if you have the proper amount of insulation in your attic to keep drafts out in the winter and heat out in the summer

- Figure 6 - Checking refrigerator temperature
- You can adjust your refrigerator's temperature by taking a temperature reading inside your refrigerator and making the necessary temperature adjustment. You can also check your refrigerator door and freezer door for leaks. Any cold spots mean that the door gasket needs to be replaced
