How to Clean Up After an Alkaline Battery Leaks:

Determine if the battery in question really is an alkaline battery. You should be able to tell this if you look closely at the battery in question. The outside of the battery should indicate what type of battery you have on your hands. If you are unsure contact the manufacturer. You will probably see a white paste on the outside if the battery in question is an alkaline battery
- Prepare a mixture to clean up after the alkaline battery has spilled. The mixture should consist of lemon juice and vinegar. Both of these are acids that will help neutralize the alkaline in the battery. You can use a small implement to mix them such as a q-tip or a piece of cotton ball
- Dip the q-tip in the mixture and apply it to the battery as well as any area near the battery. You can also use a cotton ball. Clean the area thoroughly with the mixture. The mixture should sop up the alkaline material and remove it from the surface of the affected area
- Don rubber gloves and pat the area dry with paper towels or additional cotton balls. The towels will soak up the material that has spilled out of the battery. You can also use the paper towels to clean up any area near the battery. Be careful when handling this to make sure that you don't get any alkaline battery material in your eyes or other sensitive body parts
- Discard all material that has come into contact with the alkaline battery that has leaked. Ideally you should place it in a garbage can in a separate bag where no one can get at it. The material may leak so be very careful when handling it
